I have zero inclination to play Uncharted, that's for sure. Yeah it wouldn't be your jam, I'm certain of that. >Gears of War at least might be fun I've only beaten GoW1 and GoW2, and both via split-screen co-op. As co-op games, these were decent (like 7/10). Not sure how single player would go, but if you care about playing pivotal games in genres, Gears of War was a BIG deal for the cover shooter genre. have you even played RE4 yet? RE4 is an excellent third person shooter, I mean, it really is excellent. Xeogred is right that RE4 was industry influencing. I've only beat it once via the PS2 version, but it's been ported to everything now. I did buy the remake, but not played it yet. We should note that OG RE4 is not a cover shooter, it's just third person shooting (and slicing kneecaps). >I bet Bayonetta wouldn't be as iconic all these years later, if the series was about some Dante/DMC knockoff bro or something If Bayonetta had starred a dude, nobody would have cared about that game, and it wouldn't have gotten a sequel. Sex sells, it's no mystery. Hence if Vanquish had starred a hot lady protag, we'd have some sequels to it by now. >Real shame it wasn't Vanessa again My dream would have been to have P.N.03's protagonist be Vanquish's protagonist. In a better alternate reality, it happened.

There it is, the late 2000's "Westernization" agenda from very lost and confused Japanese developers of the time, summed it up one video game cover art and video footage.
Never actually played this monstrosity but it sure was a meme back in the day.

Yes, I do like Uncharted. The original might be harder to revisit now, dunno. But U2, U4, and Lost Legacy were all very fun for me. I enjoy cinematic action games at times, and these absolutely fit the bill. And while they're ostensibly cover-shooters, they're more Prince of Persia-like platformers with big setpieces that happens to feature (a lot of) cover shooting. Not sure about Bayonetta. I mean, it's basically a Devil May Cry spinoff, and the male protagonist took off in that game, so it's entirely possible another game could have taken off as well. Buuuuuut... yeah, the style helped set it apart from other actioners and made that a less steep hill to climb. I agree with everyone else that you might really enjoy Mass Effect, toei. I loved 'em, even the (seemingly) janky first game. The modern remasters change that to play more like the sequels. Lots of room for different playstyles, too. I liked the Vanguard class, very high risk-reward but dashing around the battle field and shotgunning fools is really fun, haha.

Had to stop watching that Quantum Theory video when Future Guts blew a monster up and went "Heh. Splat." like he's mentally challenged.

The modern remasters change that to play more like the sequels. I will warn you toei that the remastered versions of the Mass Effect games are censored, due to the remasters being handled by woke dipshits. I only recommend the original incarnations. (I beat the ME trilogy on Xbox 360.) Had to stop watching that Quantum Theory video when Future Guts blew a monster up and went "Heh. Splat." like he's mentally challenged. An attempt at "dude bro" humor, as was prevalent at the time. I actually didn't remember this game. But there are loads of cover shooters from that era. Cover shooters were to the 7th gen as platformers were to the 3rd; ubiquitous.

Death by Degrees First I had to sit through an 8 minutes unskippable garbage cutscene to get to gameplay. I don't skip cutscenes when I'm actually playing a game, but I never watch them when I just want to try one. It was so long that I actually ended up watching a youtube video while it played in the background. Finally I get to a fight, only to find out that you attack with the R analog stick? What kind of asinine awkward garbage is that? And a dodge roll is two light taps on the left stick. Way to reinvent the wheel there guys, but making it cubic won't help that car roll. Then a little walking around. The game (or at least some of it) takes place on a large cruise ship. I already beat Resident Evil Gaiden, that's enough subpar action-adventure on a cruise ship for me. Another fight, still feels as deeply unsatisfying to flail around with the stupid-ass right stick. Lock on by light tapping R, that's what we need. Meanwhile the face buttons are assigned to minor unimportant stuff. You're doing nothing you can't do in a PS1 game, but you're doing it with more, finickier steps, because that's progress. I guess a lot of that became kind of "normal" around that time, because I remember seeing controls like that in a lot of Western games too, which is one of the the reasons I'm not too interested in most modern gaming. Awful ass controls that seem designed specifically to feel less visceral. Rating prediction: 3/10 Cy Girls This was called "Cool Girls" in Japan, which is a funny title for a sci-fi spy story. "Cy Girls" is still a shovelware-inspiring title though. Doesn't seem to be the worst thing ever or anything, but definitely at least a little below average for the genre - action-adventure with some shooting. You can take cover behind walls and lean out to shoot like in WinBack, but then it takes 7-8 bullets to take an enemy down, so much so that you have to reload in between, and anyway they don't seem to do anything at all (at least in the first area) and their attacks are no threat, so there's no point. So all I did was run around a drab compound for a while, looking for some object, then backtracked to another place because I was told to, then quit. Rating prediction: 5/10 kill.switch Either the logitech controller I'm using isn't good for this, or aiming at those tiny-ass targets with the right stick was always bad, but there's no way I'm playing this as it is. I can't imagine that it's as bad with a proper PS2 controller, actually, otherwise everyone would hate this game like I hated trying to play it (twice). It's funny because Xeogred was talking about how it's dual sticks or nothing the other day and there's no way I'm ever playing through a dual stick shooter if it's going to be like this. I'm willing to try with a better controller eventually though. But I hate using the right stick. I'm left handed, so maybe that's the problem. Precision tasks with the right thumb just feel wrong. I feel like it would a lot better with a mouse, though. Also the chick whispering "say my name" in your ears all the time is annoying.

Aiming in that era can still be a bit odd game to game and oh yeah, controllers can make a huge difference. I don't think I've heard of left handed players taking up issue with the usual control schemes but who knows? Looking the game up itself ... it doesn't look very good to me.

I don't think I've heard of left handed players taking up issue with the usual control schemes but who knows? Looking the game up itself ... it doesn't look very good to me. Ex was bringing it up a lot recently, though I think it's mostly because it (2003) was the step between Winback (1999) and Gears of War (2006). Basically it influenced the Western cover shooter wave by bringing those elements to America, something the developers of Gears of War acknowledged (the three cited influences being Kill Switch, Resident Evil 4 and Bionic Commando). Although at the time magazines mostly compared it to Time Crisis cause that was the more famous series with a cover mechanic. I don't know whether Ex really likes the game or what. It doesn't inspire me much. I did want to play Winback because it's the OG, but also because it looked cool to me. I don't need to play every other step in the evolution of third-person shooters - just the good ones (according to my tastes). For example, I know RE4 was very influential too, but I'm interested in it because I looked up a video and it just looks like an obvious good game.

It's funny because Xeogred was talking about how it's dual sticks or nothing the other day and there's no way I'm ever playing through a dual stick shooter if it's going to be like this. Yeah, so just know it can be really hit or miss per game, don't write the genre off too fast haha. It's almost like how wild 3D was in the mid 90's with no real "rules" or standards. That can probably be said for early 2000's shooters and their controls. Even last year myself playing some Xbox stuff again was a challenge with The Thing (2002), just felt kind of clunky but it had dual camera control. Then Van Helsing (2004) didn't and was doing more of the Devil May Cry 1 thing with fixed camera angles even up to that point.
Project EDEN (2001) felt really good on mouse/keyboard. It's weird but in general I vastly prefer controllers for third person games in just about all eras. There's a chance I just haven't given myself enough of an adjustment trial even after all these years, haha. Growing up I didn't have access to good PC's in my own home and when I could play good PC stuff, I wanted to play the cool exclusive FPS's, or RTS's. FPS's thesedays I can go either way but for RPG/story heavier stuff like Fallout, Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief, Cyberpunk, etc I want mouse/keyboard. It literally feels like I can explore, loot, etc these games faster that way and be more efficient. lol, but I'm never too interested in playing shooters online anymore with kids thesedays. Anytime I randomly stumble on a stream of like Apex Legends or whatever, my brain can't process how stupidly fast they're doing a million things per second. As long as I can be above average skilled in single player games I'll be happy.

Death by Degrees Rating prediction: 3/10 This game broke my heart back in the day. I was really looking forward to it, and I still absolutely love the cover art. I really like the protagonist as well, and it has decent graphics. But it's truly a horrible game. 3/10 is being generous. >Cy Girls Rating prediction: 5/10 Yep this one's pretty crappy too. I did appreciate you can choose to use sword girl or gun girl, though. >kill.switch As far as aiming goes, I don't recall having trouble aiming in this one. Granted, I played the Xbox version on a real console with an official Xbox controller. (I still own my Xbox copy of this one too.) Don't know if that mattered.
Looking at a PDF of the PS2 user manual, I noticed you can adjust the sensitivity and enable reticle highlight:
I would adjust the sensitivity to my liking, and be sure the reticle highlight is ON, so you know when you've got a direct line of site on an enemy.
I don't know whether Ex really likes the game or what.
I haven't beaten kill.switch, but from what I played of it, I'd give it a 7/10. The reason I kept pushing for you to play it, is because historically speaking, kill.switch is a significant milestone in the cover shooting genre. And I know that you like to play the foundational games that started genres, ergo. But if you're not enjoying this one, by all means drop it and continue on. kill.switch was a prototypical sixth gen cover shooter, as I've said before, seventh gen is where this genre really took off and flew high. The 3rd Birthday for example, is a seventh gen game.
