I'll look into it. I'm initially intrigued by this image from that page: Esuna joining Lejes? What madness is this?!

I think your chance getting most characters to join is like 10% for Lejes.

Yeah, Dark Law's story scenarios require some exploration and trying a few things. I remember one in the beginning did annoy me, I think you had to try to leave a location for events to trigger. I don't think it was the one with the farm, though, IIRC that's just the prologue. But maybe it was. For the most part there are multiple solutions, and there aren't 20 menu options or whatever. You just need to have the adventure game mindset. There are also dungeon scenarios.
Doesn't sound like you gave Dark Half much of a shot. That context you were talking about is probably revealed later on. I know personally that if I'm in the middle of a RPG, I'm not going to get into some other RPG easily.

toei - I didn't give Dark Law or Dark Half much of a shot, just 15 minute samplings. From that I determined Dark Law is the more interesting game, and Dark Law seems to be just as much an adventure game as it is an RPG. I believe Dark Law could be an interesting beat, but might try one's patience due to the lack of player direction. I do think it'd be interesting to see what you think of Dark Half if you play it for 15-30 minutes.

I don't have a ton of SNES RPGs I still want to play, and Dark Half is on it. This is the list:
Bushi Seiryuuden Dark Half Far East of Eden Zero Glory of Heracles IV G.O.D. Last Bible III
Dark Half is pretty much at the bottom of the list in terms of priority, so... 2026? 2027? If that.

toeiThat's a small list. I get the gist you've either played (sampled) or beaten every SNES/SFC JRPG there is by now. So what do you consider the top 5 SNES/SFC JRPGs? And how would you rate The 7th Saga on a 1-5 scale? I think Energy Breaker looks interesting, but IIRC you said it sucked. Chaos Seed also looks highly unique, but I've read it's got quite the learning curve.

I used to do all the 16-bit RPGs, but I got pickier around maybe... 12-14 years ago. I goofed around with Chaos Seed but decided not to play it because it's more of a dungeon-building sim thing at first glance and I don't really care about building things. The other SNES RPGs I haven't played where mostly fan-translated after I stopped playing everything. Almost all of them are Dynamic Designs releases, because I've had bad experiences with several of their translations. Besides, aside from FEDA, they seem to pick mediocre RPGs to translate a lot of the time. Then there's a small handful of other games like Cyber Knight 1 & 2 (cause very slow battles and high encounter rates) or Inindo (same reason, plus it's too old-school Koei).
At some point by the late '00s/ early '10s I was so starved for SNES-style RPGs that I remember putting a lot of effort into finding the very elusive full copy of this mid-'90s Korean Windows RPG called "Legend of the Ancient Dragon" that was released in English at some point. Every version on the Internet wouldn't progress past a certain early point, either because it was really a dump of a demo version, or it just shipped with a fatal bug. There was a lot of mystery surrounding that game's English release. Maybe there was no full version. I don't remember if I ever found it, but probably not, as I know I didn't beat the game.
Top 5... pretty conventional stuff except for one. Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VI, Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, Breath of Fire 2 (the high encounter rate would probably piss me off today though). Lufia 2 at number 6. The best SNES SRPG is Super Robot Wars Gaiden: Masō Kishin - The Lord of Elemental. I don't know for action RPGs... I like Brain Lord and Soul Blazer and others. But to me the Genesis wins in that category. Its only turn-based RPG that can fit in a 16-bit top 10 is Phantasy Star IV, though.
At the time I played The 7th Saga I gave it a 8/10, which at the time meant "legit/I like it". Today that would be *** or something like that. It's a good game and it does its own thing. So somewhere in the middle, as SNES RPGs have a high quality average.

>Chaos Seed but decided not to play it because it's more of a dungeon-building sim I've read it also incorporates feng shui into the game design somehow, that's a unique idea. I've never played any dungeon building RPGs, no idea if I'd like it or not either. Though these on PSP always looked interesting to me: >Cyber Knight 1 & 2 I only played CK1, and it was rather bad, didn't finish. I've read CK2 is much improved, was that not the case in your experience? >Legend of the Ancient Dragon If you could find a complete English version, would you still want to play it? >Top 5 Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VI, Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI, Breath of Fire 2, Lufia 2 Of those I've beaten CT (8/10), FF6 (9/10), and L2 (8/10). Never played DQ6. EB might be fun but I hate its aesthetic. BoF2 I got a ways into, but was annoyed by its lame plot/scenario design and dropped it. I did beat BoF1 previously (enjoyed 8/10) and BoF3 (didn't enjoy much but finished 5/10). I might enjoy CT more these days, I plan to replay it via the DS port some decade. >Super Robot Wars Gaiden: Masō Kishin - The Lord of Elemental I don't know much about the franchise, but I will have to check that one out. I do enjoy mechs and SRPGs. >I like Brain Lord and Soul Blazer and others These two are high marks in my book. What do you think of Alcahest? >The 7th Saga I gave it a 8/10 That's a fair score I think. Elnard/The 7th Saga, neither are perfect, each have their qualms under the hood, but there's still a lot to like about those games. Especially the somber world and insidious looking enemies, nice OST and unusual plot.

I feel like this is why I burned out a bit on JRPGs - I still like them, but it's easy to bounce off of them because they often feel like what you've done before, just worse. It's really hard to play some of the mid-tier SNES RPGs when you've experienced the masterpieces you listed. Buuuuuuut I do occasionally want to dig into another one, and Treasure of the Rudras was a hit for me. And I'm feeling that urge again to some degree just because it's been a while since I've played through a traditional JRPG. For my money, the best SNES fan-translated game is Front Mission: Gun Hazard. Phenomenal stuff. Oh, because I know you won't hit up a guide, Ex, here's your statistical chances for Lejes recruiting characters or fighting them: Recruit - 10% for all but Lux, who is 20%. Bad partner for him, anyway. Fight - 10% for all except for Wilme, who apparently hates Lejes and sits at 50%.

The 7th Saga always reads like some alien artifact from another world whenever I see others talk about it haha. That said I finally looked up some videos again last night and was pretty floored by how awesomely "SNES" everything about it is is. I guessed right that it was more mid era SNES, being 1993. Everything about the look, sound, etc is so SNES in a cool way. The enemy sprites look amazing. The vibe seems awesome. But yeah, not going to touch it when I'm literally 40 hours into TWO JRPG's right now. lol
I still think I should probably prioritize Phantasy Star II. I guess I should give the Breath of Fire's another chance though someday, being the big Capcom fanatic I am.
I too can't stomach Earthbound. I don't think the meta/contemporary/surreal types work for me. Unless it's doused in demonic sci-fi like SMT, then sign me up.
