I think those levels are hilarious, they are pretty BS... shades of Battletoads.

Oh, yeah, I think people forget that Crash (at least from what I've played) was pretty darn unforgiving.

Very much so, that's another big reason why I had a blast with the trilogy. They were balls to the wall. 2 was the hardest one for me specifically, but that might vary for some people. You can sometimes get that mask to take another hit, but otherwise everything in these games kills you in one hit... when you're not falling in all the pits. You guys know I live and breath some tough games, Crash 2 was no dang joke.
Here's one level that comes to mind and showing off the OG version here:

Another thing that doesn't help is that for a bit, I was playing on the PS3, which adds quite a bit of lag and is completely unavoidable no matter the settings.

Decent article about the end of the DS/3DS era: arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/09/a-fond-farewell-to-the-weird-and-wonderful-nintendo-ds/"We have not permanently lost the DS's games or gameplay. Many of the best titles are already available on Switch, PC, or mobile—heck, I just caved and re-purchased the Phoenix Wright games for PC during a sale on Steam earlier this month. Perhaps, however, we have lost its whimsy. There must be hundreds if not thousands of virtual pet apps now available for iOS and Android, I'm sure—and I'm equally sure that every last one of them must be some kind of microtransaction-based, ad-filled, data-sucking, time-gated energy sink. Anything engaging is now a service, no matter how much I may long for the days when you could pay $20 or $30 and simply own a thing."

Gah, queue my regret of trashing my big magazine collection two moves ago.
I don't recall stumbling upon GameFan much at all though.

I'm running out of space for stuff myself - I have a ton of magazines that I really don't want to get rid of. If I did, though, it'd probably be the PC Gamer/CGW stuff. Nintendo Power stays forever. I was actually back home on Wednesday, and I managed to find all but three of my issues, and I have no idea where they went. I'm almost positive I had the SFII Turbo, Zelda II, and TMNT issues, but they were missing from the usual stash.

Diehard Gamefan was very influential to me as a kid. I don't just mean in a "this got a good review so I want to try it" kind of way either (though their glowing reviews for games like Zenki PC-FX helped me to seek that system out). Their layouts (usually by Nick Rox) made even the games they trashed look enticing haha. A good example is The Fireman 2 for PS1. Even though they gave it like 40/100s or something, all I could think when I saw their blown-up screenshots of it was "I've got to find this game" haha (was a big fan of spritework and sad when 3d came along so games like that on the 32-bit systems kept me going). Loved the import coverage.

Oh, absolutely. As they noted in the linked article, they insisted on using quality paper, and had one of the best capture setups in the industry. Their screenshots looked fantastic.
