I can see all that. It kind of aligns with how I sometimes like to argue that FF6's first half is better than the second half for me thesedays. The pacing and sense of adventure is just sheer perfection. It was probably daring with what they did with the WoR though and it's somewhat of a soft reboot having to recruit characters again, explore a new area. But dare I say it, other JRPG's have done some of those elements better. It really just might be that I've beaten FF6 so much, now I have to conjure up silly nitpicks.
But yeah that all makes sense. The beginning of a good JRPG can be whimsical, adventurous, mysterious, it's a good time sinking into another world. At some point you've seen all its tricks and are kind of just moving through more dungeons and story beats. But that can still be cool too, it's just a different flow after awhile.

toei: Yeah, that first disc was amazing. I started flagging about halfway through Disc 2, and maybe it's for the exact reasons you mention.

For the PS1 FF trilogy... I've beaten FF7, rated it a 7/10. FF8 I still haven't finished. I did beat FF9 but did not enjoy it. I thought the first disc of FF9 was "OK", but the rest of it fell off a cliff. I'm not a fan of FF9 at all. I'm really not a big FF fan in general, outside FF6 and FF12. Those are the truly great games in this series.

I'd probably give FFVII at least a 7/10. I'm separated from it by a large amount - had a replay going but fell off of it years ago. It's good. It's not amazing, though. FFVIII is my favorite on PSX, and I'd probably give that, in retrospect, an 8/10 at least, maybe higher. But I have no idea how well it would hold up for me now, because I've not played more than an hour or so into it since then.
FFVI is indeed the best of the series. I need to replay that one some day. I beat it many, many times all those years ago.

If you ever bother to finish or restart that FF7 replay, I recommend playing it with the "Beacause" retranslation. I replayed it with the Reunion mod (some PC version QoL additions in there) around the same time I was playing FF7Remake, and it was kind of awesome how well a better translation lines up with with the modern games. The characters were very similar to their excellent characterization in the new stuff.

Oh, definitely - much like Legend of Dragoon, I feel like playing with a better translation would really help the experience.

I gotta get over to Japan someday.
For everything over there in general, I gotta experience it.
