A really excellent update to the "Nintendo didn't use compiler optimization on Super Mario 64" video. MVG seems to really know his stuff. TL:DW - there's a plausible reason why they didn't use it. Good follow up video Sarge. For me this explains everything:

Excellent point. Between that, and general compiler bugs, it's pretty clear what was up. They just happened to get it sorted before the PAL release. And lest someone thing Nintendo is the only company that has had dev kit issues, I've read a ton of stories about some of the stuff Sony has sent out. The original PlayStation was apparently very poorly documented.
I also chuckle at this developer account for the PS2:

You are handed a 10-inch thick stack of manuals written by Japanese hardware engineers. Talk about rough stuff. Makes you really appreciate the PS2 programmers who could pull off binary magic like Final Fantasy XII or Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. I think I read somewhere that the PS3 was even harder to program for?!
Obviously the PS4 using standard well documented hardware was a game changer. Gotta praise Cerny on that one.

Although some Sony PS3 exclusives have been ported to the PS4... Konami's MGS4? Even with all the HD collections and ports the series has eventually had, MGS4 has been deadlocked on the PS3. It definitely does seem to be with however it was programmed around the crazy hardware or something haha. I remember most multiplatform games last gen were best on 360 too. Although some stuff (Japanese, Square Enix) did seem better on PS3, and it was sometimes nicer working with one BluRay vs DVD's...
Cerny's direction and influence on the PS4 definitely seemed to be for the best and I'm glad he's still around for the PS5 launch.
This might be the biggest wrinkle to the rumors of the PS5 being able to play PS1-PS4 games, even via original discs. PS1 and PS4 would be easiest, PS2 maybe a challenge (do we need that extra laser again? lol), but PS3... no clue how they'll solve that. It seems like a pipe dream, but if the PS5 can be a hub that can 99% accurately run PS1-PS4 games, that would be so cool. I'd probably put my PS2 stuff away.

Custom chips running specialized firmware for all those older systems? That's a lot of custom engineering work, chip manufacturing, and would definitely add to the base price. OH there is another alternative... Ha ha wouldn't it be funny if this retro-compatibility was via some kind of streaming service? Like Stadia, except you just stream old PlayStation games online? I would lululululul

Honestly, that thought crossed my mind as well. It's "BC" via streaming. Not what I'd care for.
That being said, they clearly got some level of PS2 emulation working on PS3, and those have quite disparate architectures as well. It's at least plausible they pull off some high-level emulation for PS3 on a system as powerful as a PS5.

Well I hope it's native emulation (soft or hard) to the point that you can put a PS1/2/3/4 disc in the machine and play it.

It was weird how the PS3 had two levels of PS2 emulation, I think via hardware (the earliest models, hardware wise with the laser), then they went cheaper with some software emulation that had worse accuracy and supported less games. I recall seeing videos of how games were forcibly stretched and had messed up aspect ratios, maybe you could still remedy that by just manually changing your TV settings on the fly but that sounds annoying. Ultimately I'm glad I didn't really go out of my way to find either OG PS3 at some point, those models sound like they have a high fail rate and let's be honest, they are ugly as crap. I've been fine still using PS2's instead. lol
The thing that gives me hope for the PS1-PS4 dream is Cerny himself haha.
