Oh, that reminds me, I swapped out that "Prehistorik Man" cart for Mario Bros. on NES, which I didn't even notice they had last time. I also bought Wall Street Kid, Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance (quiet, you), and Azurik (again, no comments from the peanut gallery).

Beat Down is actually a good game, despite all the bad reviews from bad reviewers. Reminds me of a Yakuza with more freedom and less morals. The group brawls were just ok but the one-on-ones were legit. One day I'll write an in-depth article about it.

I don't know about Beat Down man... for a brawler it's not a game that offers immediate gratification, you have to dig deep to find its appeal. Beyond the constant loading times and fractured game structure lies a robust fighting engine and fantastic noir atmosphere. Graphically Beat Down is not up to par (environments are very bland), but the character models have a decent amount of detail. The OST does a good job of setting the tone of the rundown crime ridden city. It's true beating the ever living hell out of a rival gang leader while your avatar spews curse words to their bloodied face is highly cathartic. Unfortunately the bland busy work mission designs, myriad game design inconveniences, aggravating camera, and constant loading screens get in the way of the fun far too often.

I didn't think load screens were much of a problem, but maybe that's because I played it via emulation? Otherwise the only real flaw for me was the cameras, but even then they're only really bad in the warehouse district. The rest of the time it's just standard PS2-era clunky, which I can deal with just fine. I liked the missions for the most part, except those involving escorting. Thing is, it's not really a brawler, it's an action-adventure game with both brawler and simplified 3d fighter battles. There are skills to unlock; two different guys giving missions, most of which are optional; ATM machines you can bust open for quick cash, police to fight or run from, a jail cell to escape from; taxis allowing instant travel from one area to any other, Genesis Shadowrun-style; a huge number of secondary characters to duel, recruit, bully or even murder, some of whom have unique skills like unlocking certain doors or stealing cars (ie free taxis); underground weapon stores; and an insane number of clothes, tattoos and haircuts to buy. And the atmosphere is great. And the story, while minimal, is appropriately gritty. And each of the... was it six? Playable characters has a unique fighting style (I recommend the latina for her crazy leg combos). To me the game's a real diamond in the rough.

The reason I'm not buying retro games, is because I've already bought all the games for older systems I want. I'm starting to run into this problem. I only bought one Gameboy Color game and 2 N64 controllers, but there were mountains of gaming stuff like: 1) I don't own it, but it doesn't interest me 2) I sorta want it but it was priced the same as eBay 3) I already own it It would stand to reason that in a few more years I'd just run aground with the law of diminishing returns. However, the current crop of consoles will fall out of vogue soon and then I'll probably start picking those up from the junk heaps.

toei Yeah I wouldn't say it's a terrible game, but still a 6/10 for me. It's kind of like a dirtier grittier more violent River City Ransom. Although Beat Down is better than RCR. anayo I've been consciously staying one generation behind (in console land) for many many years now. While that does mean I hardly every play a game while it's still in vogue, it does mean that I buy the games at 1/5th what people pay for them while they are the new hotness. Works just fine for me!

I second this soo hard. I probably never play a game until it's at the very least 5 years old, usually more so. I just can't rationalize spending 60 bucks on somea thing that I could, if I were patient, instead spend 5-10 bucks on. Furthermore, by the time I get around to looking at games they've been vetted beyond the initial hype so I'm only spending my time on games that truly great. I'm kidding, I still play a bunch of garbage because I'm cheap and I have no taste, but it's the garbage I know that I want.

Pictured: black Nintendo 64 console (no cables, jumper pack cover missing) - $5 see-through teal Nintendo 64 console (no cables, jumper pack cover missing) - $5 Sonic Colors CIB (Wii) - $2 Total price: $12 The black N64 works. The teal one powers up but I can't get any games to boot. I think it's because there's hair and particles and crap stuck in the 72 pin connector or whatever you call it. Even if the teal one's a wash, $10 for a working N64 console is pretty decent.
