Yeah, I can definitely imagine two split screens being an issue for this kind of game. Still looks legit though. But if it's tough even for you, hot dang I'm ready for a challenge. I'm glad it's sprites and looks visually appealing, since I can't say that for Shattered Soldier's style.
It sucks since the box art for Contra 4 is incredible haha. But yeah, I think maybe I should just loosen up on always wanting to buy CIB or new releases, for things like this. Not worrying about that as much will give me more options. Dragon Quest 6 (DS) was another one more recently, since the CIB prices are ridiculous for that one, I was able to secure a cart at least.

Has it really gone up in recent years? I... actually have an extra complete copy. Shrink-wrapped, even, although I'm not sure it's actually original shrink wrap - looks more like a re-sealed copy.
*checks PriceCharting*
Ah, a little over $30. Not terrible, especially considering I paid that much for it new back in the day.

Check eBay though. For a boxed/manual copy they were looking more like ~$50. Seeing some new sealed ones for $70. Nothing too crazy... but I guess I just have different expectations for older handheld games and pricing.

Well, that's what PriceCharting is supposed to be pulling from, recent eBay auctions.
EDIT: Yeah, I see what you mean. It looks like they may be missing a bunch of recent auctions that would bump the average price up. Once shipping is thrown in, you're looking at $40-50 for a complete copy.

I beat Contra 4 many years back, and yeah, it's tough. It's a good looking game, but you can tell it's an homage by westerners, not legit Japanese goodness. It's a 7/10 at most for me.

Contra 4 was the entry that got me into the Contra series. I had never played a Contra game up until then. I've since beaten Contra 1 and Super C on NES, but Contra 4 still has special significance for me. I still need to play Contra 3, though. I daresay I'm overdue for it.

And I had a blast with Hard Corps: Uprising earlier this summer, for one of the newer ones.

And I liked Blazing Chrome and Super Cyborg as well. I know Xeogred wasn't as big a fan of the latter, though, but I'm a sucker for the NES style.

I played the North American version of Hard Corps on my Sega Genesis in 2018, beating it by the skin of my teeth with one of the worst endings. I loved the graphics, music, and bombastic comic book exposition. I hated the gameplay. It was so exacting and unforgiving that it just sucked the experience dry of any fun for me. However, this is probably because they made the difficulty brutally high to discourage people from renting it in the West. I intend to try the Japanese version via my Sega Genesis Mini someday. (For this very reason I refuse to play the NES version of Ninja Gaiden III, and I recently ordered Ninja Ryukenden III for the Famicom on eBay.)

As someone that's legit cleared some old Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and Contra, I'm surprised you think that way. Hard Corps took me about a week to master with Sheena and was pretty epic to get through. It's certainly different than the others though, so maybe it just wasn't for you. Shattered Soldier seems way harder at a glance to me, but I can't get into the aesthetics for that one at all so I'm not really into it. Playing Hard Corps now with health would just feel wrong to me. lol Sarge: Yeah Super Cyborg was solid... I never bothered to finish off that last level though.
