I'd never heard of that site until you guys started talking about it. It sounds so ludicrous that I can't help but wonder if it's actually satire. But yes, rarity often instills irrational feelings of adoration towards an owned object. I say irrational because although the rarity may increase the financial worth of said object, it doesn't necessarily increase the fundamental worth.

For as “meh” as PDS was for me, I can see why Saturn fans love it. 3D polygon graphics were a huge deal in the mid 90’s, but the Saturn wasn’t very good at that compared to the Playstation. So it created a different set of standards where stuff that would have been “eh whatever” on the Playstation was “omg amazing” on the Saturn. I even remember in the early 2000’s when I bought the Saturn version of Quake, my brother noticed me playing and commented, “Wow, that looks like a Playstation game.” I think Burning Rangers was lauded for similar reasons. It looks like its game engine is about to have a stroke and I don’t personally find it fun or interesting, but Saturn fans seem to always put it in their top 10 lists. The Saturn had plenty of SEGA arcade conversions with more impressive poygonal graphics than PDS. If you had a Saturn, you probably had Virtua Fighter 2, maybe Fighting Vipers or Fighters Megamix. I think what really happened in the beginning, before the rarity set in, was a combination of the strong desire among Saturn fans for a Final Fantasy-killer, coupled with the attraction PDS's unconventional systems and looks held for non-RPG fans. The Sega Saturn Magazine, for example, made a huge deal out of the fact that the characters were realistically-proportioned. And of course, we shouldn't be so arrogant as to assume that no one genuinely loves the game! This is usually how I've seen Saga described over the years, the "FF7 Killer". How often do those "killers" work out? Gotta miss those tag lines. Definitely something I'd like to check out someday though, since Sarge and everything else I've seen say it's only about 20 hours long. I've actually spent a lot of time listening to the Panzer Dragoon OST's at least, they're all really top notch and unique.

I really do enjoy Panzer Dragoon Saga a lot, even if the text I wrote felt a little more negative. I think it's a great game. I'm sure a lot of the praise went to it because of rarity and exclusivity, but since I didn't toss money at it, I feel like I can be at least somewhat objective about the whole deal. That being said, I think it was going for around $150-200 even when I burned it. I bought and modded a Saturn specifically with this (and Shining Force III) in mind. I've gone through PDS several times, like I mentioned before, but I still haven't beaten SFIII. Go figure! (I have finished 1/2/CD, though.)

One of my top five video games. Bought it new and enjoy it to this day, find the combat really thrilling and love perfecting every enemy. A nice article.

Thanks! I wish I'd been able to score a copy myself back in the day. I had to make do with modding my Saturn for it.
