Most PS2 games run very well under PCSX2, but many require that you fiddle with the graphic plugin and other options. Some games will work great with your video card (hardware mode), some will glitch and necessitate software rendering mode (which takes much more power), sometimes you need texture filtering or some other option, some need you to activate special game fixes, some require that you turn off the speed-up options enabled by default... In my experience, most games run very well provided you find the right settings (I don't mean that you have to do it mid-session, usually once for the game and it's enough), but it's a lot of hassle, for sure. My weak old computer can only handle about half of them at full speed, though.

Yeah I probably need to fiddle around with PCSX2 a bit more... I've thought about using McBoot or some other way of playing those games on a real PS2, but it seems so tricky to me. Maybe I just haven't looked into it enough but I'll figure out some sort of solution at some point (preferably when I'm less busy ha).

McBoot or some other way of playing those games on a real PS2, but it seems so tricky to me FreeMcBoot is actually not very difficult. The trickiest part is getting FreeMcBoot installed onto your PS2 memory card. It's just some files that have to be copied onto the card. Then when you download a PS2 ISO, you patch the ISO using a small utility program on your computer. Then you burn the patched ISO to a DVD. When you put that DVD in your PS2 and boot it, FreeMcBoot detects the disc and allows you to play the burned DVD on your PS2 like a normal game. (To insure long life of the PS2 laser, you want to use high quality DVD media burned at a low speed.) The only problem with FreeMcBoot is that PS2 slims manufactured with 9xxxx serials are incompatible. This is a good FreeMcBoot information post for those interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/2ppzy6/attention_everyone_with_questions_about_freemcboot/Also... FreeMcBoot is designed to work with DVD games. The rarer CD based PS2 games don't work with it. But converting a CD PS2 game into a DVD PS2 game is not too hard. You can often find pre-converted DVD versions of CD games online. It used to be easy to get those off TheIsoZone but alas.

Pretty sure the way I got files on mine initially was using a PS2 Codebreaker. That lets you back up or load up save games from USB. I think it also used standard zip file compression (just a different extension), so you could actually package up other files that you needed. I'd be shocked if there weren't a pre-packaged Codebreaker save out there for Free McBoot if you wanted to go that route.
EDIT: Yup.

I was reading on Reddit that you can order PS2 memory cards off eBay that have FreeMcBoot already installed. I haven't looked on eBay to see if that's true, but if it's true - and affordable - that'd be an easy entry point.

Might be the easiest way to jump in.

Looks like they're only around $10 too, so pretty affordable. I might have to try that out at some point then...
