And no Battletoads? Aw, that's no fun! (I actually did beat this a while back. It really is brutal. Another ridiculously hard NES game to take on would be Holy Diver.) Haha - nope. I'd be up for a tough platformer, but nothing as punishing as either of those. Platform games are not my strongest suit. I think I'll go for Normal, Hard, and Nightmare, and then try to squeeze in an Easy of my own somewhere in there. If its on PC I probably haven't played it. I'll offer PC suggestions because you have the least experience there... Normal = Diablo II or AbuseI'd like to chime in and put forth the original Diablo instead. I believe its atmosphere, environments and music are the best the series has to offer. I always thought Diablo II had been mainly conceived with co-op and multiple playthroughs in mind - only way to unlock harder difficulty modes - I also dislike how many maps are just huge fields with some random enemies and chests thrown in and the occasional small to medium-sized dungeon. On the other hand, Diablo offers a much more compact experience as it takes place in a single dungeon and you feel like you are making some actual progress as you reach the lower levels. The only downside is that apparently there's no way to but a digital copy. I believe Blizzard might not even hold the rights to it. I still strongly suggest that you play it - through whatever means. I feel like I'm always treading on eggs when it comes to what games are to be considered bonafide classics, but let's see. Some classic FPS games I'd recommend are F.E.A.R., Painkiller and Serious Sam: The First Encounter. Also, a classic open-world game I really enjoyed is Mafia. One of my favorite SRPGs that can probably be considered a classic is Vandal Hearts. As for JRPGs, I'd like to recommend Persona 3 given your, uh, penchant for J-pop.

I'd like to chime in and put forth the original Diablo instead. The reason I suggested Diablo II is because it has a robust loot-drop system, and Dunpeal enjoys loot-drops. Diablo the original does have the best atmosphere agreed. Of all those you mentioned: F.E.A.R. = I have not played this, and I'd like to do so. This could work for my Normal mode pick. Painkiller = I have not played this, but I've always thought it looked a bit too simple for my tastes. Serious Sam = I have played this, and it was too simple for my tastes. Mafia = I beat this many years ago on PC. I've got the sequel on 360, but not played it yet. Vandal Hearts = I've played the first mission of this. It seemed OK. I wouldn't mind putting more time into it eventually. Persona 3 = I put a fair amount of time in this via the PSP version. Ultimately I didn't like it. My big issue was the dungeon designs were terrible, and you spend so much time in them. Plus the plot wasn't good either. I'm still interested in trying P4 and P5 someday. But P3 just didn't do it for me at all. Thanks for your suggestions!

But P3 just didn't do it for me at all. Yes, Painkiller and Serious Sam are very... brainless games. I can see why some people might not like them and I also grow tired of them after awhile. I do prefer F.E.A.R. by a wide margin. Persona 3 was a joke recommendation, really. I remember reading here somewhere that you didn't enjoy it. I'm gonna say this, the plot is laughable and the characters are mostly meh or outright bad. The former Persona games were definitely better in the story and character department. However, I did enjoy the press turn combat system - which just feels good and works similarly to SMTIII - also handicapping myself by playing solo and using my starting Persona only gave me a fair challenge. I played both P3FES and P3P and I immediately realized the PS2 version was the superior one. On PSP the game is stupidly easy, even on the new 'Maniac Mode'. Also not a fan of the VN style conversations - the original 3D cutscenes add so much to the atmosphere, it just isn't the same. So yeah, only reasons I played it to the end were the alright challenge and the fairly solid combat but I still had to torture myself through school to get to the good stuff - just like in real life.

I couldn't get into Persona 3 either, despite being really hyped after that intro. However, I ended up really enjoying Persona 4, like a whole lot. (Can't believe this game just barely qualifies for discussion here!) I also think F.E.A.R. is a wonderful game. I'll take some time shortly here to try to come up with recs for people And good call on Diablo II, Ex, it is right up my alley, but I've already played it a bunch, it was the game I built a pc for as a kid, and my wife and I still play it regularly. (Them loots, man!) I've never played the first game though!

I played both P3FES and P3P and I immediately realized the PS2 version was the superior one. That's a unique (and likely accurate) opinion. Seems like most fans favor the P3P version by a wide margin. I'm willing to give the PS2 version a try someday, I do own a legit cope of FES. Also for the record; SMT: Nocturne is my all time favorite PS2 JRPG. It's just phenomenal, and is the antithesis to so many JRPG tropes that annoy me. I really should have played through the Digital Devil Saga games by now. Those are going to have to be my next PS2 JRPGs after Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land is finished. I really wish Sony or some Chinese company would put out a portable PS2 that could play ISOs from a memory card. That would go a long way to make catching up with PS2 games easier for myself at least! However, I ended up really enjoying Persona 4, like a whole lot. (Can't believe this game just barely qualifies for discussion here! One of the two reasons I bought a Vita years ago, was so I could play Persona 4 Golden. The other reason was Ys: Memories of Celceta. I'm ashamed to say I have not yet played either of them yet. All I can say is collecting games is a lot easier than finding time to play them all. Diablo II / (Them loots, man!) I've never played the first game though! Three other PC retro action-RPGs with dem loots to consider:Nox (2000 original release date) Sacred Gold (2004 original release date) Titan Quest (2006 original release date) You mighta likey.

However, I ended up really enjoying Persona 4, like a whole lot. (Can't believe this game just barely qualifies for discussion here! Definitely gonna play P4. Just gotta get used to the protagonist looking like a generic K-Pop boy-band member. Not to mention how some fangirl spoiled the villain for me, not too happy about that. Seems like most fans favor the P3P version by a wide margin. Me and the fans don't see eye to eye about many things. Also for the record; SMT: Nocturne is my all time favorite PS2 JRPG. It's just phenomenal, and is the antithesis to so many JRPG tropes that annoy me. I really should have played through the Digital Devil Saga games by now. Amen to that. I've beaten Digital Devil Saga and I plan to tackle the sequel in the near-ish future. It's good but even solo I found it fairly easy. To be fair, the Hitoshura fight is rumored to be one of the hardest secret boss fights ever, but I don't really see myself replaying the whole game just for that. Three other PC retro action-RPGs with dem loots to consider:Nox (2000 original release date) Sacred Gold (2004 original release date) Titan Quest (2006 original release date) Solid recommendations. Well, Titan Quest didn't really do it for me, but Nox is up there with Diablo.

I'm thinking I'll take on Shinobi PS2 for Nightmare Mode. That leaves a Normal and a Hard Mode. Platforms available - basically up to the 6th generation, plus Dreamcast and SOME PS2 games (it's a case-by-case thing, I own one and my computer can emulate some games but not all as it's very ancient). I also have a PSP and a DS, no modern consoles. I wouldn't buy a game unless it sounds really good, though. PC... I'd be limited to stuff DosBox can run well and low-spec stuff on Steam, but I'm more likely to stick with consoles.

Okay, I'm going to do Normal/Hard/Nightmare. Don't know which month will be which; I'm playing that by ear.

Best I can tell, this is where we are currently:
Dunpeal -Normal = ? -Hard = ? -Nightmare = ?
Ex -Normal = F.E.A.R. (PC) -Hard = ? -Nightmare = Severance: Blade of Darkness (PC)
Sarge -Normal = ? -Hard = ? -Nightmare = ?
Toei -Normal = ? -Hard = ? -Nightmare = Shinobi (PS2)
Tsumuri -Nightmare = Shinobi (PS2) -Nightmare = Viewtiful Joe (GC) -Nightmare = ?
Hoping Anayo, Xeo, and Chibby will join in!

EX - What ARE the genres you avoid, anyway? If you already mentioned it, my bad, I haven't noticed it.
Sarge - Have you ever finished a Shining Force? If not, seems like a must. I reiterate my recommendation for Shining Force CD, because the story is self-contained (baring some references to the mainline game) and the gameplay is bit more involved. It's a great game. Let's see, what else? Wild ARMs XF is a great tactical RPG gameplay-wise, with fun and varied missions, but the story is terrible. Music, of course, is excellent. I'd recommend it as a SRPG worth playing through.
