Good idea for a thread. I'd be especially interested in hearing about action and action-adventure games, since I already know the RPGs pretty well. Any horror games worth a damn, outside of those SH ports?
One game I loved in concept, but not in execution was Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble. It's the third entry in a long-running series published by Spike, which started on the PS2 and migrated to portables permanently with this entry. It's basically a beat-'em-up with action-adventure leanings, with a high-school Japanese delinquent setting like in Technos' Kunio-kun games. The game takes place over a few days during an annual school trip to Kyoto. Apparently, this is a pretty big deal, as high-schools from all over Japan make that trip over the same time period. To delinquents like you protagonist, this is the occasion to prove themselves the number one Bancho in Japan by taking on everybody else. The game basically consists of going over the city, looking for the top contenders and provoking them into fights. Whenever you beat one, you gain his special move. There's a time system, and certain people will hang out in certain spots at specific times, so you also have to ask around to figure out where everyone is. It's not a long game, but if you want to actually beat everybody within the allotted time, you'll probably have to play through it more than once. The problem is that the battles feel stiff and not quite responsive. It's just not much fun to fight in this game, and considering it's 90% fighting...
You can pretty much see how the battles feel just by looking at them:
I think some of the slowdowns and choppiness are due to the emulator, though.
The game has charm and potential, but the core isn't strong enough.
As of now, there are 6 mainline entries in the game; the last one was on the 3DS. There's also a trilogy of VNs aimed at girls on the Vita, which apparently got an anime.
