All I can say is, if you were to play Nayuta for the story, you'd be disappointed even it were translated by Alexander O. Smith himself. The draw is the fun action-RPG gameplay, the charming world design, the great graphics, and the wonderful OST.

Black Rock Shooter: The Game Brandish: The Dark Revenant Killzone: Liberation Mega Man Maverick Hunter X Mega Man Powered Up Metal Gear AC!D 2 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Resistance: Retribution The 3rd Birthday Ys Seven Black Rock Shooter: The Game - looks surprisingly cool and my kind of aesthetic, even if I can be picky about stuff like this. Brandish: The Dark Revenant - so now that I'm maybe open to the PSP, should this be the first Brandish I play? Killzone: Liberation - expected an FPS, got an overhead tactical shooter? Looks interesting. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X - one of those weird "remakes" that looks like a downgrade in every single way for an 8/16bit kid like me haha. That said, still looks cool and I want to check this one out for sure. Mega Man Powered Up - I think this is a MM1 remake? Looks a bit more charming than Maverick Hunter X actually. Metal Gear ACID 2 - can I just skip to this one? Looks more SRPG than the first from a quick glance. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - already played as discussed. Resistance: Retribution - like Killzone PSP, I expected an FPS... and got a solid looking third person shooter. Hmm. The 3rd Birthday - isn't this game supposed to be infamously bad and killed the franchise? lol. Well, I need to beat Parasite Eve 1-2 first. Ys Seven - Definitely interested, I'll probably go with the Steam version though.

- Dark Revenant is the first and only Brandish game I've beaten. The move to 3D and smooth rotations makes a huge, huge difference. If you're going to get into it, that's going to be the one that sucks you in. - Killzone: Liberation is one I still want to finish. I like it a lot; it's a really good overhead tactical shooter. - Powered Up is pretty fun. There's both an original and arrange mode. You can also unlock all the other robot masters to play as, which is really intriguing for variety's sake. - I didn't much care for Maverick Hunter either, but I admit I didn't plow into it that much, either. - No, no, no, The 3rd Birthday is good. Granted, the franchise didn't survive, but it's not like it was exactly on fire at that point, either. It peaked with the first game and fell off from there. - Yeah, I'd probably recommend going with the PC version of Ys Seven now. It's on GOG as well: www.gog.com/game/ys_sevenI want to add Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles to the list. I assume you've beaten Rondo, and sure, it's better, but I like how the remake plays with expectations a bit. It's still a good time.

I've always heard that 3rd B-Day had a truly terrible story, but that the gameplay was very solid. Also, PE2 came out in 1999, and this game in 2010. Definitely didn't kill the series, which barely existed as a series in the first place.

What's a travesty is we never got three Vagrant Story games.

What's a travesty is we never got three Vagrant Story games. Sure, but if they were going to be as different from each other as the PE games... Actually, I think Vagrant Story would have worked best as a one-per-gen series. Having another similar entry on the PSX would diminish its uniqueness, but a PS2 take on the formula would have been dope.

I actually think Vagrant Story could do really well today, what with how popular the Souls games got. It feels like a game that would fit extremely well in that sort of dark and gritty universe, just with its unique combat instead.
And yeah, I don't think you're wrong - Vagrant Story actually feels like it would be better as a sort of late-gen capstone for each generation. I guess to some degree, you can see echoes of it in FFXII.

XeogredBrandish: The Dark Revenant - so now that I'm maybe open to the PSP, should this be the first Brandish I play?
It was the first one I played, and absolutely loved. After that I beat Brandish 2: The Planet Buster on SFC, which was excellent as well, but not as user-friendly as Dark Revenant. Metal Gear ACID 2 - can I just skip to this one?
Yes, it has a standalone plot. It's really great man. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - already played as discussedThat's why I recommended this instead: I really enjoyed it, and IIRC was the first PSP game I beat. Resistance: Retribution and got a solid looking third person shooter
It's good man. Also has a really clever aiming system. The 3rd Birthday - isn't this game supposed to be infamously bad and killed the franchise? It's a badass game, insofar as the actual gameplay goes, and also a graphical powerhouse for the PSP. The plot is horrid and is best ignored. I think Vagrant Story would have worked best as a one-per-gen series. I'd have really appreciated that, as long as Matsuno helmed each one. A PS2 and PS3 version would be sublime, especially if they pushed the consoles as hard as the PS1 original did. Easily the most impressive 3D game on PS1. I actually think Vagrant Story could do really well today, what with how popular the Souls games got. It feels like a game that would fit extremely well in that sort of dark and gritty universe, just with its unique combat instead. I agree that if Vagrant Story were to be released today (with modern graphics), that it would be received much more warmly than it was in 2000. The game was ahead of its time. There may be hope yet... screenrant.com/vagrant-story-2-details-yasumi-matsuno-square-enix/

Heck yes. Glad it's not completely forgotten. It needs to happen. I think they could still make it work - at one point, I would have said that the S-E of old was dead, but to be honest Octopath Traveler and the Bravely games have rekindled some hope, not to mention the quality of FF7R.
