Sorry I haven't weighed in yet here, 'cause I love some action-RPGs. Just been really busy in the evenings.
With regard to The Magic of Scheherazade, it grades out like much of Culture Brain's oeuvre: very ambitious, but lacking the polish of higher-tier efforts. I like the game, but it definitely has some rough spots.

Ex you're killing me with how often you name drop Demon's Souls because of the rules here. I'll make a thread for it in a few months.
I don't think I can get into the original Baldur's Gate games, but I do want to give Dark Alliance another shot someday.

Ex you're killing me with how often you name drop Demon's Souls because of the rules here. Well it'll be HRG compliant next year! Freaking awesome game.

Once again, I really need to sit down and put a list together of my favorites in the genre. Strangely, I do tend to thing of ARPGs as top-down affairs, although that's obviously not always the case. That leads me to ignore a few games when discussing them. Since Symphony of the Night resides in my top two games of all time, then it gets the nod from me.
My favorite Zelda games are hard to sort out. I'd say that Link's Awakening tops the charts, with Link to the Past playing 1a) to its 1). The best 3D game has to be a tie between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, the latter of which feels like it should be older than it is! TP is the more balanced game, although it does have a very slow start.
I like every bit of the Quintet-developed SNES games. Soul Blazer is almost Gauntlet-esque, Illusion of Gaia has a lot of polish and a cool swap mechanic, and Terranigma was my favorite ARPG on the system for the longest, and may still be.

So, this is more a random thought, but it also fits as a revival of the ARPG thread. Did anyone here ever play Musashi: Samurai Legend? I think folks completely forget about the game, especially since it was in the shadow of a lot of other PS2 games, as well as Brave Fencer Musashi. I had a pretty good time with it, though. Speaking of BFM, I still love the opening of that game. "Please, princess, Sir Little Turd, calmeth down!" Funny stuff. EDIT: How did I not get this all these years? Allucaneet Castle - "All you can eat".

Along the lines of Musashi: Samurai Legend, does anyone have recommendations for really good sixth-gen action-RPGs? Thoughts on which ones to avoid? I'm pretty sure I played a ton of them, but there's always a chance I missed a few.

does anyone have recommendations for really good sixth-gen action-RPGs? Thoughts on which ones to avoid? I have a pretty fair idea of what you've beaten in this regard. So I'll be omitting the obvious. But here's some stuff worth checking out that you might not have played yet... DreamcastElemental Gimmick GearRecord of Lodoss WarPS2Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance IIBerserk: Millennium Falcon Hen Seima Senki no Shou*Champions of Norrath Champions: Return to Arms Crimson Tears* Dark Cloud 2 Dual Hearts Eternal Ring Forever Kingdom Genji: Dawn of the Samurai* Graffiti Kingdom Shadow Tower Abyss Shining Force EXA Shining Force Neo The Sword of Etheria Yakuza* Yakuza 2*GameCubeCustom RoboLost Kingdoms** Lost Kingdoms II**Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Star Fox AdventuresXboxCastlevania: Curse of Darkness Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes Jade Empire Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes
Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders
*These are often referred to as "beat 'em ups" but they have enough RPG elements to count IMO. **These have CCG aspects, but are absolutely action-RPGs in practice. Awesome games both.
The bolded stuff I will personally vouch for being "really good", everything else I've seen praised enough online. Edit: But on the real if you really want to play a badass action-RPG, go play Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection and thank me later.

Dang, I keep forgetting I've got that (installed, even, and played for a bit)!
I have played most of those, which probably shouldn't be surprising. However, I've only finished Genji, Star Fox Adventures, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and Jade Empire out of that list.

I also strongly recommend these action-JRPGs (for the Nth time): Soma BringerTrails of Nayuta(Not HRG compliant - but worth your time.)
Speaking of SB; on the DS front I know you're an ardent fan of the system and have beaten many of its action-RPGs. Well all of these got decent reviews in case you haven't tried them yet:
(This does have a full English fan translation.) (This dungeon crawler is not going to please everybody, but it pleased me.)
(You don't have to do much farming, you can do mainly dungeon crawling if you want.)
(Not HRG compliant, but had to be mentioned.)
(This one has very mixed reviews - but it's an exclusive, and does have a full English fan translation.)
Edit: I'll also mention that the PSP has loads of action-RPGs as well. We could do a thread on that system's RPGs alone very easily.
