Another nice beat Tsumuri. Interesting to hear how much of a mixed bag the trilogy is, these games have yet to pull me in so maybe I'll just give Black Plague a shot sometime. For some reason I was thinking Requiem wasn't official, but I was mixing it up with Necrologue.
Did these games still have the visual distortion/insanity effects that the first Amnesia had? Which kind of killed my interest in that one, all those visual effects combined with wacky head bobbing made for a very unfun experience. Along with all the candle wax item management...

Not really, looking at monsters will just make you breathe heavily and your vision changes ever so slightly. I believe that's how they handled it in Soma, too. It's not even remotely comparable to Amnesia or Call of Cthulhu: DCoE. Now that was annoying. Anyway, while I really hated those dogs, I still highly recommend playing them in order of release for the story. They are short games, so it's no biggie.

I played through Overture back in 2007. I haven't played the other two. My memories of Overture are kinda fuzzy, it's a short game and that was eleven+ years ago. I remember being impressed with the game's atmosphere and physics, and genuinely feeling creeped out at times. I do remember the dogs being annoying, but I also remember setting up traps for them using boxes and the physics engine. I think I rated Overture a 7 out of 10, but I don't remember where I posted my review for it, that was long before the days of HLTB. Anyway thanks for reviewing the series for us @tsumuri, I'd honestly forgotten all about these games. I do own the trilogy via GOG, and I'd like to try Black Plague sooner rather than later.
I did play Amnesia: The Dark Descent a few years back. I found it disappointing and didn't bother finishing it.

My only beef with Splatterhouse 3, come to think of it, is the absence of the shotgun. It would have been glorious to have two or three of these in the game, just like in the first (I can't remember if there were any in the second). Blowing zombie dogs away with a shotgun in the original Splatterhouse felt like Resident Evil before its time.

Blowing zombie dogs away with a shotgun in the original Splatterhouse felt like Resident Evil before its time. As did blowing away zombies with a rifle in 1992's Alone in the Dark...

Shotguns can really make or break any first person shooter, too. You can tell whether the shooting in a game is worth anything just by how good or bad the shotgun feels. Speaking of which, has anyone played the 2008 reboot of Alone in the Dark? It received some terrible reviews back in the day.

Umm... yeah I've got nothing. lol
The New Nightmare is the one that always interests me, but I did play some a few years ago and got stuck rather fast from what I remember. Didn't flow as smoothly as RE or whatnot, but maybe I'll give it another go someday.

Playing Silent Hill 2 with headphones is insane, unfortunately my TV doesn't let me control the volume with headphones for some reason. The volume is good but I'd turn it up more if I could, though then other games are sometimes too loud with the defaulted volume. I think I'd need an external device to control the volume via headphones I guess. It feels like it'd maybe be a waste getting a soundbar or something in the type of apartment I'm in now, so I'm not sure what I'll do.
Of course, being able to hear a little outside of the headphones could be a plus here... had to do several double takes and look behind me while playing it tonight.
