I definitely recommend the first Hotel Dusk.
I was one of those people that was disappointed by a lot in the 32-bit era. Once you got past the "holy crap, polygons!" shock, many games played notably worse than their previous incarnations. I do, however, remember being wowed by a demo of FFVII, in that there was a gigantic mech they were squaring off against. Massive enemies like that were a rarity on earlier systems, especially to the scale that 3D allowed for.

I've finished Hotel Dusk. I didn't hate it, but I thought it was pretty bland and I don't think I want to play the sequel.
Another thing is that unlike graphic adventures (or point-n-clicks), Shenmue has a real feel of places and time, so it's fun to just explore and walk around.

Speaking of DS adventures, though, Ghost Trick is amazing. Absolutely loved that game.

I've often thought that Shenmue (1 at least) was hilariously bad, playing it many many years later outside of its launch. I can easily respect how ahead of its time it was though. Now this said, I still don't think I've given up on them. Since the HD collection came out and now III, I've been curious about the series again and might give it another shot sometime. I'm sure my Yakuza bias will come out, but enjoying those as much as I have is another reason I'd like to give Shenmue a second chance and I at least kind of know what to expect next time I play it. I'm not sure what I expected the first time into it but I never found any SAILORS.

The core gameplay is investigative - you question people to find people and information, you infiltrate a company (Shenmue 1) or an organization (2) to further your quest, etc. It's not GTA, it's not Yakuza. Yakuza is basically a modern action RPG with brawler battles.

Shenmue has a real feel of places and time, so it's fun to just explore and walk around. Shenmue has its moments, but it also has a litany of bad game design concepts I didn't enjoy. I certainly didn't hate Shenmue, but after beating it I was in no hurry to play its sequel. A sequel I've owned for Xbox since 2007 and counting.

Looks like Super Fighter Team is shutting down publishing games. Apparently will continue as a developer, but that also means they won't be releasing Vixen 357 for Genesis.

Looks like Super Fighter Team is shutting down publishing games. Apparently will continue as a developer, but that also means they won't be releasing Vixen 357 for Genesis. It's a trash game where every battle takes forever because every unit's defense is incredibly high, so you barely do any damage. And there are untold numbers of units involved per battle. Like SRW, but probably worse. I was really into SFT when it started - they (he) were (was) the first company (person) I was aware of to release new games for a classic console, and the thought of a new Genesis RPG was incredible, back when 16-bit RPGs were still pretty much the thing I cared most about (sadly). It's pretty impressive that they lasted that long, too. On the other hand, Beggar Prince was the only decent game they ever released, Star Odyssey was hot (b) trash, Legend of Wukong was even worse, and they hadn't released anything of note since. So yeah?

Well, Nightmare Busters. I probably should have ordered that one.

Hmmm, I always ignored that one, but it doesn't seem too bad at first glance. This is the same guys that made Legends and Legends PSX and Iron Commando and Soul Fighter on the Dreamcast, though, all of which suffered from massive pacing issues, so I wonder if that one turned out to be an exception somehow.
