Man they really squeezed as much out of those little vocal snippets as they could.

On a similar note, I feel like Voodoo Vince was one of those games that made people panic about the occult destroying the youth. To me, anyway, this was seems pretty cartoonish and harmless. I think I played a demo for it in a store and thought it was okay, but not worth trying to argue with my parents to justify.

I think maybe less folks were actually aware Voodoo Vince actually existed. (I knew, though; I've got a complete copy because of course I do.)

I feel like folks I knew at the time were aware and were outraged, but I wouldn't put it past some of them to look for something to be outraged by.

Oh, it's definitely a game my parents would have griped about if I were still a kid. And I actually get that; my parents kept me from that stuff until they knew I had a firm grasp on reality. At that point, I could pretty much do what I wanted, although I self-policed myself for years and years. I mean, I was nervous just buying Metal Gear Solid, and I was definitely over 18.
That clearly hasn't held up over the years, though. I still don't usually care for games with gratuitous sex or violence, though. I will often play them if they're good enough, however.

My brother and I really wanted Mortal Kombat II when it came out but our mom thought it was too violent. We got Street Fighter II Turbo for Christmas that year instead. But we saved up our money and eventually bought our own copy anyway!

Sometimes my mom would shake her head and say something disparaging about the game, but she didn't care. She trusted I understood the difference between fantasy and reality. I used to rent all manner of 80's horror movies with my friends. That was the benefit of small town rental stores that didn't care what they rented to kids as long as it didn't come from the porn section. Those were WAY worse than any video game I was playing at the time.
Maybe that was bad parenting but I haven't killed anyone yet to my knowledge.

My parents were much the same, although perhaps to a questionable degree in hindsight. They always let me watch whatever movies they were watching regardless of rating. So there's 6 year old Ex watching Phantasm, or 9 year old Ex watching Hellraiser, for example. My dad even let me watch Faces of Death with him when I was 10. I think because I watched so much horror with them, the movies I chose to rent were tamer as a result. I wasn't after horror. I tended to choose sci-fi movies a lot. Which neither of my parents were interested in. So I'd end up watching those by myself.

My mom is a trekkie so I got the sci-fi bug from her. My dad only watches comedies.

But we saved up our money and eventually bought our own copy anyway! I missed this post earlier, but I laughed a little when I read this. I knew a few different kids in school back in the day who did the same thing. It's funny how game store clerks back then didn't give a damn. They'd sell Mortal Kombat to an eleven year old, no prob. Although not having stepped foot in a brick 'n mortar game store in so long, I wouldn't know if this is still the case today. Will prepubescent kids be able to purchase Mortal Kombat 11 from GameStop when it releases this month?
