Most retailers these days won't sell rated-M games to anyone under 17. I know Gamestop definitely won't.

But we saved up our money and eventually bought our own copy anyway! I missed this post earlier, but I laughed a little when I read this. I knew a few different kids in school back in the day who did the same thing. It's funny how game store clerks back then didn't give a damn. They'd sell Mortal Kombat to an eleven year old, no prob. Although not having stepped foot in a brick 'n mortar game store in so long, I wouldn't know if this is still the case today. Will prepubescent kids be able to purchase Mortal Kombat 11 from GameStop when it releases this month? I remember it was my father who took my brother and I to the store to get MKII. He didn't know or care what the content of the video game was that we were buying. But it's not like the store clerk asked our father if he was OK with us buying this game. Pretty sure the store clerk didn't care either way. I mean, it was the 90's. The store clerk was probably like, "Whoa, cool game, little dudes! Have fun playing it!" I remember being in a Game Stop sometime in the past 10 years and witnessed the clerk letting the mother know that the game her son was about to buy was rated M.

Ziggy and @gunstar Green Yeah my most vivid memory of controversy over the sale of violent games to minors was around the times of the Grand Theft Auto hot coffee scandal and the execution-style kills in Manhunt II. I think that was when they started enforcing the MSRB ratings at the checkout counter. Incidentally, I just remembered about 15 years ago my aunt was complaining to my Mom about Halo. She said she didn't like how violent it was and how much my cousin liked it. My Mom thought she was being vapid and silly.

I remember buying this game at Toys 'R Us back in 1992: ( Sword of Sodan - Genesis) I was thirteen and the clerk didn't bat an eye.

I wish I could contribute to this thread, but I really can't. As a kid, I literally asked my mother to buy Duke3D for me and she did as I waited outside. I already owned a copy, but I either had lost it or that was the Atomic Edition. Not that she approved of violence in video games herself, but if I was cool with it, she'd let me play it.

Do you remember any classmates or childhood friends with parents who disapproved of video games? I guess I meant parents in general, the "your" was really more of a guideline.

I remember me and one of my classmates playing DMC when we were like 10 at his grandparents' house and his grandma was there as we watched this cutscene where Dante gets impaled through the chest by a giant sword. There was a lot of blood. She seemed reasonably squeamish, but it was cool.

It helps that it basically powers him up and he just gets right back up.

So speaking of Devil May Cry, that reminds me of something else related. I guess it was Christmas of 2001 that my parents got me a PS2. I happen to stumble upon the PS2 before hand (I totally wasn't snooping). I found the console and a copy of Devil May Cry. Come Christmas morning, I open the PS2 then I go to open the DVD sized gift and it's... not Devil May Cry. It's instead some racing game. I didn't get DMC. Some weeks afterward I steer the conversation toward which PS2 games I may be interested in checking out. I mention Devil May Cry. I forget the exact words, but my mother says something to the effect of I don't need that game. I asked why and she said something in regards to the subject matter. I stopped pressing. I figured what probably happened was my mother picked up the console and asked the store clerk or someone of "video game age" what a good game would be to get for her son, that person recommended DMC and so that's what she bought. My father saw the game and thought it has to do with the devil and told my mom to exchange it for something else.
To this day I haven't played a DMC game. It totally looks like something I would have enjoyed, too. Since it would have been my first PS2 game, I probably would have spent a lot of time with it and grown an attachment to the series. Instead, I got some through away racing game that I can't even remember the title of. I traded that racing game toward the first PS2 game I purchased for myself, and here's the kicker, GTA3. It was the shining example of games you don't want your children to play lol. So GTA3 was OK, but DMC wasn't.
I remember my mom being with me when I was trading that racing game. She said something like, "Oh you don't like that game?" and I said something like, "No, not really." but I was thinking to myself, "Should've gave me Devil May Cry, ma!"

Stories like this are what I was wondering about. That's a really funny memory, thanks for sharing that.
