The arcade/console system with hardware and games that sell for giant gold bricks!
I know very little about the Neo Geo, other than it seems to have about 100 fighting games on it (makes sense being an arcade based machine). It's awesome that a huge portion of its library is now being released digitally on the Nintendo Switch. There has to be at least 50 some games available and counting. S it's impressive how much is up there, maybe they're even shooting for the whole library? SNK must have a lot of say over its library or something.
I currently have these wishlisted, if anyone has any opinions on them:
Cyber-Lip Zed Blade Ninja Commando Crossed Swords Magician Lord Shock Troopers Aero Fighters 2 Strikers 1945 Plus Samurai Showdown 2* King of Fighters 98'* Last Resort Puzzle Bobble 2 Pulstar Alpha Mission 2 Blazing Star
* For Samurai Showdown and King of Fighters, a quick web search shows Showdown 2 is one of the fan favorites and I've always heard good things about KOF 98'.
I posted a Pulstar video in another thread earlier but I want to share it again here for this thread, I think it really shows off just how powerful some forms of the Neo Geo could be. Which is why I'm pretty curious about some of these games, they look much more advanced than things you'd see possible on the 16bit systems. This just further makes me sad that sprites/pixels and 2D games were roughly pushed out during the PSX/Saturn/N64 era, because the arcade and Neo Geo stuff here sure looks gorgeous. Not only do the graphics blow me away but the music seems very much in the vein of classic redbook audio CD games.

The majority of NEO GEO fighters are legit, honestly. Standouts for me are Fatal Fury 3 and its plane-switching gimmick, Art of Fighting 3, which introduces a few 3D fighter staples to 2D fighters (PPP and PPK combos, pouncing on opponents when they're down), the Samurai Shodown series in general, in which single hits do lots of damage and it's more about strategy and timing than combos (it's almost a precursor to Bushido Blade in that sense, though you can't normally kill the opponent with a single hit). In general I love SNK's style, too, so lots of cool characters. Two non-SNK NEO GEO fighters worth checking out are Breakers / Breakers Revenge and Double Dragon. Both are very classic SF2-style fighters, but Breakers feels incredibly smooth and satisfying, while Double Dragon is also above-average in execution. Unfortunately, Technos' other 2d fighter, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, is really so-so. ADK's fighters aren't as good as SNK's, but Ninja Master's plays pretty well and features an all-ninja cast. Aggressors of Dark Kombat would probably be a cool game, but the goddamn AI is crazy over-powered, a commmon issue with SNK's fighters as well. Another plus with Breakers and DD is that the AI is actually reasonable.
There aren't many platformers and side-scrollers, and what I've heard is that their difficulty makes them almost unplayable after a few levels. Magician Lord, etc.

I bought a PS2 just for Metal Slug Anthology. And that's the PS2 game I've spent the most time playing. It's so bad.

Neo Geo. Otherwise known as the "Holy crap, I will never afford this!" system when I was younger. (Actually, that was true for most of them.) That system is the one that is on my list. I very much want one. I'd actually rather have an actual cabinet more than anything, and have seriously considered either building or buying a supergun and a single-slot MVS board. In the interim, though, I'll just emulate. As for recommended games, I'm with anayo in that Metal Slug is well worth your time. My favorite fighter on the system has to be Garou/Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. I don't care if it has a small roster; it just feels right. Probably my absolute favorite SNK fighter. toei : I can vouch for the fact that Magician Lord is ridiculous. I've gotten through it, but maaaaan, it gets tough. It also has some of the most hilarious voice acting and lines from a villain ever.

That makes the original SoTN voice overs seem quite good haha. Always heard good things about Magician Lord though and I've known about it for years.
I've played Metal Slug, Metal Slug 3, and Metal Slug X. I think they're cool but don't like them as much as Contra. How are Metal Slug 4-5?

I've played through... all of them, maybe? They tend to run together in my mind, although for my money, Metal Slug X ends up being the most iconic for me. I think it's a series that, if you like the ones you've played, you know what to expect from the later games as well.
I like Metal Slug better than some Contra games, but they definitely don't beat out the NES games for me. Of course, honestly, nothing does, since I believe Contra and Super C may be the greatest run-and-guns of all time.

Pretty much every Neo Geo game has good, if not great graphics. That's what sold the games after all. Their actual merit insofar as being legitimately fun games? Yeah that all varies quite dramatically. Xeogred here are Neo Geo games Ex likes: 2020 Super BaseballDouble Dragon Garou: Mark of the Wolves Kabuki Klash Last Hope Metal Slug X Robo Army Shock Troopers Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom The Last Blade 2Viewpoint Waku Waku 7WindJammersThe bolded games are my most favorite.

I like the Neo Geo. I have an AES with an MVS converter, which does exactly what it sounds like it does, allows MVS games to play on the AES. I also have the CD system.
I own 18 Neo Geo carts (MVS & AES) overall, and paid $10-$50 each. It can be done! Though the cost of hardware can't be avoided. For the pricier stuff, I indeed head to the Switch (and, previously, the Virtual Console).
The fighting games and shmups are legit, though those have never been my favorite genres overall.
The Metal Slug series is essential. Classic run and guns. I think I may like the first one best. Like NES Contra, it's a nice taut experience. I just wish it had the full character roster. Most of the sequels are good, but can get a bit overindulgent.
Shock Troopers is one of the best top-down run and guns ever. Sublime controls, and a lovely character designs. I haven't played the sequel.
Ninja Commando is a decent enough run and gun. B-list compared to Shock Troopers though.
I quite enjoy Magician Lord, though it's one of those games that bones you if you lose power-ups. So, uh, just don't get hit.
Blue's Journey doesn't get mentioned often enough. It's a bright colorful straightforward platformer. I'd call it the Mario of the console.
Crossed Swords is a neat hack and slash with a behind-the-character viewpoint. I just got the sequel in January; haven't played it yet.

Shock Troopers is indeed quite cool. I really dig both it and the sequel. I think consensus is that the first game is better, but both are likely worth your time.

I haven't played that one yet because I'm still trying to track down a physical cart. It goes for $100 or so, usually. Annoyingly expensive, but doable. Maybe.
