1. Have you ever spilled a drink on a video game, controller, gaming console, or video game manual? If so, did it cause any damage?
Not on a manual, to my knowledge, but definitely on a magazine/strategy guide. Or more precisely, I left my bag in the back of a pickup, we got snow (in the South!), and it melted and got them wet. I spent quite a while with a hair dryer salvaging them.
2. Has a game's story ever made you cry, or at least get a little misty eyed? If so which game(s)?
Yes, and it happens a lot more now than it used to. I can't think of many specific examples right now, but there are quite a few that tug at the ol' heartstrings. I still get a little weepy at the end of Lufia II when that particular track starts playing.
3. If a wizard cursed you to only be able to play either 2D or 3D games the rest of your life, which format would you choose?
2D. While I know there are games I'd miss, I'd enjoy myself a lot more with side-scrollers.
4. Have you ever, or do you ever, play video games while using the toilet?
Without going into too much detail, yes.
5. Do you think using a strategy guide to beat a difficult game is at all cheating?
I think it depends. It edges up to the line, but I've never considered it cheating since you still have to execute proper strategies to win. For example, strats for difficult action games are often easy to tell others, but very difficult to put into practice. Plus, we all know some games were designed to be incredibly obtuse. It's no worse than getting advice from a friend that has beaten a game, at least in most instances.
6. Do you prefer dark atmospheres and serious plots, or colorful and whimsical aesthetics with lighthearted stories?
This is going to seem weird, but I like both. There is a limit to how dark I like to go with my games, but there is also a limit to how absurd and lighthearted I prefer to go as well. I think I'd say that I prefer serious, but not dismally dark, and I prefer funny, but not super-duper weird. And I'm okay if both of these exist in the same game; pulling that off is tough, though.
7. If you could instantly create any sort of video game hardware that doesn't presently exist, what would it be?
If I'm uncreative, I'd like something like the Switch, but powerful enough to emulate to perfection every single system up until now. I would love something that would let me play actual PS2/XBOX/GC games on the go.

1. No. I've always been hyper careful with my possessions, ever since I was a kid. I can't imagine eating/drinking over my game hardware. Hell, I see people dog ear pages, highlight text, or write in the margin of a book and I want to rush over and running drop kick them. I don't, of course. Usually. 2. Only Terranigma. I laughed at the very idea before I played though it in 2017, but the way this game's climax comes together is one of the most sublime achievements in the the entire medium, bar none. The "In Water" ending of Silent Hill 2 came close, though. 3. 2D. Polygons were a mistake. 4. No. I'm more the "get bathroom breaks done as fast a possible" type for the most part. 5. Yes. So are video walkthroughs, codes (whether included by the developers or hacked in with Game Genie or the like), exploits, save states, etc. I hold myself to an extremely strict set of rules defining legit play because I want to feel that all my victories count. I don't want anything tainted. 6. No preference. As long as the game isn't plagued by failings like endless clunky dialog, unskippable cutscenes, insufferable characters, etc. Execution is what matters. 7. An affordable Neo-Geo AES flash cart!

1. Yes. I made my Dreamcast controller very sticky with lemonade. I also fried a laptop like this in college. my Wing Commander III box also has a big coffee mug ring on it because I'm an idiot.
2. I know this definitely has happened because I get very attached to characters I like and I'm a big sissy but I'm drawing a blank on when right now.
3. It would suck but I'd probably survive better on 2D games. They tend to age the best anyway.
4. Isn't this what portable systems were invented for?
5. It depends on the game I guess, plenty of retro games were designed to be obtuse on purpose to sell guides or magazines and in that case I feel like the developer is the one cheating you by putting pertinent information behind an additional payment (at least in the pre-online age). I do encourage people to use only what the developer provides to you both in game and with the manual and other extras, but it's no fun to be stuck forever especially if it's due to bad game design.
6. I don't have a preference.
7. A holodeck.

1. No, but I once left a piece of melon on a table next to a laptop for a while, and juice from the melon spilled and broke my laptop. I have destroyed a ridiculous amount of laptops in my life. I'd like to think I'm more careful now.
2. Yes, but it's been a long, long time. I cried when I played Phantasy Star IV for the first time as a kid, when a certain someone dies.
3. Hard. I like both, I really do, and I've probably played a larger proportion of the 2D games I'm susceptible to enjoy compared to 3D. So I'd probably have more games left to play with 3D... yet I wouldn't want to give up 2D. So I'd slay that damn wizard.
4. No.
5. Depends how you use it. If a games doesn't explain its mechanics properly, or if you're playing an old VS fighter with no movelist, or if you want to make sure you haven't missed anything as you're finishing a game, then no. If you're looking up the solutions to puzzles and the like, then yes. I don't like doing it, but sometimes you have to. If I run into any sliding puzzle and there's a step-by-step solution available, I won't feel bad for using it, because sliding puzzles are the devil's most vile creation, and humans should be forbidden from partaking in them.
6. Dark and serious, mostly. Comedic can be great, too, but it's a little tricky as it has to be compatible with my own sense of humor. If it's gonna be farting cows or whatever, I'd rather it not be there. Colorful can be nice, but I'm not into overly cute. It's a thin line, as a lot of RPGs I love could be considered cute, and some games that try too hard to be dark end up being lame or just bland. I can definitely say I'm not into cutesy late 80s / early 90s platformers, though.
7. I have multiple ideas for games, but nothing for hardware, really.

1. Have you ever spilled a drink on a video game, controller, gaming console, or video game manual? If so, did it cause any damage?
Only once that I can remember. A few years ago, I spilled a glass of Welch's cherry juice all over my gaming computer's keyboard, as well as an expensive gaming mouse. I was immediately quite furious with myself for being so clumsy. Due to the juice being sticky when it dried, I ended up having to disassemble the keyboard and mouse, clean all the parts thoroughly, let it all dry out, and put it all back together. Thankfully everything still worked fine. From that day on, I swore to only have drinks with lids in my gaming room. If they spill, they will still leak a little bit, but you have time to pick them up before they completely flood out like a normal glass. I'm a grown man who drinks out of sippy cups!
2. Has a game's story ever made you cry, or at least get a little misty eyed? If so which game(s)?
Indeed, it's happened a handful of times. A few that I can remember; Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Ico, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.
3. If a wizard cursed you to only be able to play either 2D or 3D games the rest of your life, which format would you choose?
This is an intentionally difficult question, and almost impossible for me to decide. But ultimately I'll have to say 3D. The reason being; in my middle aged gaming exploits I've taken to immersive exploration as a deeply valued aspect of this medium. Exploring in first person 3D is absolutely tantamount to that aspect.
4. Have you ever, or do you ever, play video games while using the toilet?
Absolutely not. To me this is just disgusting. I don't wanna be blowin' poop particles all over my expensive handheld, tryin' to level up while smellin' my own funk, nah dog. Ain't pushin' pause with no stanky fingers! Now I'm saying this as someone who gets in and out of the restroom with tactical precision. I understand some folks don't have that luxury, and have to spend prolonged periods in the restroom due to medical issues. Fair enough there. Although I'd still just read a book or magazine instead.
5. Do you think using a strategy guide to beat a difficult game is at all cheating?
It does depend.
For some adventure games the solutions are completely and utterly byzantine. We're talking rubber banana logic. For someone to use a strategy guide to get passed utterly illogical nonsense, okay fair enough. Also, JRPGs can be notorious for forgetting to tell the player where to even go next to continue their plot. A lot of older JRPGs will guide the player through their narrative, and then just suddenly stop doing that. Which leaves the player wandering around aimlessly having no idea where the next plot trigger is. In that regard, yeah a strategy guide is warranted, just to get the game back on the rails again.
On the other hand, strategy guides can be cheating. In this regard I'm specifically talking about following a strategy guide verbatim to beat any kind of turn-based RPG/SRPG. Notice I said turn-based. When you're using somebody's else's step-by-step combat tactics to win, and/or utilizing special equipment you only found due to someone else's direction, you're hardly winning the glory yourself. I have seen people claim that The 7th Saga, Etrian Odyssey, or SMT: Nocturne were easy games. Ha! Only later they admitted they were using exploits found on the internet to mitigate the inherent challenges. That's cheating, plain and simple. I think if you're going to play a challenging turn-based game, you should respect its challenge. Climb the mountain yourself, or go hike a hill instead.
6. Do you prefer dark atmospheres and serious plots, or colorful and whimsical aesthetics with lighthearted stories?
Overall I prefer dark and serious. It just does a better job of drawing me in, and making me care about what I'm doing. Light and whimsical stuff starts to feel a bit like eating too much cotton candy after a while. (This is one reason I haven't finished any of the Mario & Luigi RPGs yet.) That said if I play too many dark and serious games in a row, I do find I need a palate cleanser eventually. The Atelier series does wonders for that.
7. If you could instantly create any sort of video game hardware that doesn't presently exist, what would it be?
Pretty hard to beat a holodeck! Right now though I still dream of a portable PS2 player. Basically a Vita, except it has a 4:3 screen, and can play PS2 games from ISOs on its internal SSD. I'd pay stupid money for that.

Me three. It's probably not something that's too far off either.

1. Have you ever spilled a drink on a video game, controller, gaming console, or video game manual? If so, did it cause any damage?
Absolutely not. Can't think of a single time I've damaged any electronics at all. I can't say that for my friends and most people though.
2. Has a game's story ever made you cry, or at least get a little misty eyed? If so which game(s)?
Just the other day during Mass Effect 2. The Suikoden games had some big moments for sure, Xenosaga III's ending, Silent Hill 2, etc.
Nice call on Terranigma's finale, 20thcenturygamer. I remember being speechless during the whole ending bit, it felt supremely "cinematic" and stylistic for the SNES, amazing ending. 3. If a wizard cursed you to only be able to play either 2D or 3D games the rest of your life, which format would you choose?
Very tough honestly, 2D has the quantity but my 3D favorites are so top tier. But I'll say 2D because guess what, DOOM counts too. 4. Have you ever, or do you ever, play video games while using the toilet?
Only fake games on my phone.
5. Do you think using a strategy guide to beat a difficult game is at all cheating?
No, but I only reference them if I'm absolutely beating my head against the wall at some part in a game, or if I can really tell a "point of no return" is coming up and I want to make sure I experience everything possible on a first run.
I actually get really stubborn sometimes, where I'll see some people utilize a completely different strategy, but then I just think nah... if I can get THAT close doing things my way, I'm going to keep at it and prove others (nobody haha) wrong. Even if it's futile!
6. Do you prefer dark atmospheres and serious plots, or colorful and whimsical aesthetics with lighthearted stories?
I could play horror games all year long but even I like some balance and color at some point. As for gritty/serious stories, that's also my preference but not required. I feel like the older I get the less important this becomes and I can see the charm in more childish things, in some cases. Everything doesn't have to be grimdark, but that's all I wanted growing up. Typical boy/teenage stuff probably. So I'd say 70 dark/serious | 30 light/colorful. Zelda and Metroid always have a nice middle ground feeling, but I certainly love when they lean into the darkness.
7. If you could instantly create any sort of video game hardware that doesn't presently exist, what would it be?
Ultra Omega Super Nintendo 64-Quadrillion, always offline, pre-packaged with every single release across Nintendo's entire history, all Japanese games translated to your language, customizable controller, 10TB HDD just in case, all Wii games have been retooled to play with a traditional controller, a secondary screen like the Wii U gamepad is available for those titles and DS/3DS games. You're set for life.

Xeogred I like Xeogred's idea for a console. I'd simplify it to: can run every game in existence from a completely exhaustive database, auto-translates them perfectly (hey, it's a fantasy). Also, it cures all diseases and health conditions the player might have, and automatically drains a preset number of calories per hour from your body, so you can play all day and not get fat. And it pays you so you don't have to work.
