Yesterday I was doing yard work, and near my A/C unit, I noticed a small white rock exposed in the dirt. I started digging at the "rock", and this is what I found: Large images/backside: Having no idea what this was, I did some research. Turns out in 1989, Nintendo and Pepsi ran a contest: It makes sense this cap was from 1989; that is when my house was built. I'm assuming one of the guys who installed the HVAC system, probably discarded this next to the house. And there it sat for thirty years, until lo and behold a video game fanatic found it. Unfortunately the Santa Mario cap was not a winner, on its back it says: HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM PEPSI-COLA
PLEASE TRY AGAIN
Anyway, so this relic of the past got me thinking; have any of you ever participated in a video gaming contest of any sort? I mean either to win stuff, or perhaps a tournament?

Wow, what an artifact. Nice find! I won a Street Fighter II tournament once at a gaming party our game design teacher hosted back in high school (it was a school wide event, not small scale). Think I got a $50 Best Buy gift card out of it. Johnny was a friend I beat in the finals... kind of funny, never ever saw this dude mad once for years back in school, but he was livid when I won the tournament and didn't say a word.
My parents never paid for any magazine sweepstakes or call ins, etc. Always wanted to participate in some contests though.

Wow, what an artifact. Nice find! Agreed. I never expected to find a thirty year old Nintendo related oddity buried in my yard. That sounds like it was fun. I'd like to try a local Street Fighter tournament someday, but I've never heard of any around any places I've lived. I don't tend to live in big cities.

I remember that cap! I didn't have a Nintendo at that time, though.
I actually participated in GameStop's Street Fighter IV tournament. I ended up taking second at our regional store. Could have had first, but I didn't own the game, so had no practice going in. They changed the timing on supers, so I never could get Ken's stuff to pull. Basically, I matched up against one of my former lab students, and I took him down quite a bit, but since I couldn't nail supers (and there's a sort of "revenge" thing going where if you're getting pummeled, you get a lot of meter), he took the matches from me.
I almost bowed out the previous round, though, against a Guile player. He took the first two matches from me, then I proceeded to beat him three straight times, without supers. Lots of footsies involved; turns out there are a lot of folks that don't block low very well. It was probably annoying to watch, but pretty satisfying to pull off.
Anyway, I got a certificate and a SFIV-themed headband for my troubles. Still got 'em.

I can attest from personal experience that Sarge plays a tough Ken.

Anyone remember the Mario fruit snacks where you'd win a special prize if you got the blue princess? I think it was just a t-shirt or something.
Anyway, I bought so many bags of fruit snacks waiting to get that princess. I used to share them with this neighborhood girl, Janel. She didn't know about the contest and she ate the blue princess right before my eyes. I remember it all happening like it was in slow motion. I think I even uttered the classic "Nooooooooo!!!" Never saw another blue princess.

Anyone remember the Mario fruit snacks where you'd win a special prize if you got the blue princess? I do not remember that, and your story was great. I was trying to find these fruit snacks on the 'net, I don't see them. There's a thread on Reddit where someone was trying to find them too: https://www.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/3an8tu/tomt_candy_nintendo_gummy_candy_from_late/ Do you remember the brand name that produced them? Or any other distinguishing characteristics? I want to see a picture of these things.

That site says... "This item is somewhat rare. Back when Nintendo had their first fruit snacks line, you could win this shirt if you found a Blue Princess fruit snack (my best friend's little sister actually did find one). You could also get the shirt by saving proofs of purchase and sending a few bucks to the company, which my mom did for me. I loved this shirt to death. My mom helped me jazz it up a little with fabric paint and jewels (to help make it a little more girly). The shirt features 8-bit style Mario and Link, has the Nintendo fruit snacks logo, and says "I Saved the Princess". The original version had four-color printing (red, yellow, green, black) and no glitter."
I bet the bolded part was in very fine print on the packaging.
Hey I think I found all the things now... I vaguely remember seeing the blue Super Mario packaging, long ago in the lost aeons of my youth.
