I only use headphones if I'm playing games where I have to "echolocate" where things are in the game or if I need to communicate with other players over microphone. The only such game I play is too new to discuss here.
What I would like to ask HRG is: do you any of you play model 1 Sega Genesis with the headphone jack? I always thought that was a neat feature but I rarely made use of it myself. I had a model 2 Genesis as a kid and that was what I connected to my TV during my "Year of the Sega Genesis" in 2018...

Never did myself, but I love the model 1's nobs and dials, it's so analog heh.
And I think supposedly some variants of the model 1 produce the best sound compared to all the Genesis models.

do you any of you play model 1 Sega Genesis with the headphone jack Yes that was the first Genesis I had, and I did indeed use that headphone jack. Although I had to sit closer to the TV than I wanted to do it, because I didn't have an extension cord. I eventually traded that Model 1 to a guy for a Model 2 though, although now I can't remember why I did that. That was back in the '90s.

I don't like using headphones generally speaking. I don't find it immersive, instead I find it to be sensory deprivation. I like to be able to hear background noise.
I do wear headphones when listening to, or playing, music. I wouldn't want to subject my family to that accursed noise.
Don't think I've used headphones for gaming in over 20 years. I used to occasionally, if the family went for a long car ride and I had the Game Boy with me.
(Did y'all know that the Neo Geo also has a headphone jack??)

(Did y'all know that the Neo Geo also has a headphone jack??) I did not know that. Although I don't think I've ever seen a Neo Geo console in real life either.

do you any of you play model 1 Sega Genesis with the headphone jack? This is the Genesis I use, and I used the hell out of its headphone jack before getting a good speaker setup (which has an Aux Out port of its own), but I still use that headphone jack to pull Stereo sound out and into the switcher. At some point I ended up with like 5 different Sega Genesis', so I dug around to see what advantages the different models offer, and found that the Model 1 consoles that say "High Definition Graphics" on them are supposed to have the best sound output. I had one, and also always loved the look of it, so that was enough reason for me to bother with it not outputting AV Stereo. Also looks killer next to the Sega CD Model 2, even though its not its intended partner. Didn't know the Neo Geo had a headphone jack either, that's pretty cool!

My last model 1 Genesis I had modified to output stereo audio from the back of the console (also S-Video). It was simply tied to the headphones jack though, so the volume slider still controlled the output. That was a few years ago. I have since sold that model 1 but acquired another. Then I started using RGB, and people make this nifty SCART cable with a 3.5mm pigtail to get stereo audio. www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/sega/sega-mega-drive-1-sega-genesis-1-stereo-rgb-av-scart-cable-tv-lead-pro-buildBut in recent years, people have shared a mod to add stereo output while bypassing the headphones volume slider. That's what I'd really like to do, if I ever get around to it.

I wasn't aware of that stereo mod. I'm in the process of getting my consoles hooked up via RGB, but I think I'll probably stick to that SCART cable with the pigtail, I don't mind the extra cable wrapping around to the front or the slider controlling the volume too much, though I can see why people would want it.

Yeah, I've been using the headphones jack pigtail with an RGB cable for some time and it's not horrible. You can set the volume slider then forget about it unless you accidentally bump it. You can get some distortion if you leave it at max, so you want to set it around 7. The pigtail isn't too obtrusive if it has a right angle 3.5mm jack like the above picture. I had one with a straight jack though and it could get annoying at times. I would like to do the stereo mod eventually though just because it's cleaner and you don't have to worry about the volume slider.

Yeah, I'm using an RGB SCART cable myself for my Genesis, and I run it through a SCART-to-component converter. For as bad as Genesis composite looks, the RGB looks that good. Really nice stuff.
I actually have a kit to throw an S-Video mod together, I just haven't gotten to it. I've got several spare Genesis systems that I'd be willing to try the mod on. Unfortunately, most of my modern TVs have no S-Video support! Boo!
