I brought this up in the HRG 2019 State of the Union and it seemed to garner some interest. So to start I'll ask any interested members the following questions: - What retro games are you interested in playing online together? - When is your schedule most conducive to playing?

I've wanted to revisit Rastan 3 for a while. It's on MAME. If anybody's not familiar, this one's a straight-up beat-'em-up with a fantasy theme, comparable to Golden Axe, maybe. Best time... on weekdays, 22:00-00:00EST (to start - game can be beaten in under an hour). Weekends, potentially any time starting in the afternoon. I'd also be interested in Wild Guns (SNES), and probably any other good beat-'em-up.

I can certainly try, although I don't know how bad my latency will be. Gaming on a 4G point isn't the most optimal, but then again, my brother plays Destiny on it, so... acceptable?

What retro games are you interested in playing online together?
Competitive: Fighting games, racing games, sports games. Co-op: Beat 'em ups, shmups, action-RPGs. I'm good with emulating anything from Atari 2600 to MAME to PS1, or PC games.
When is your schedule most conducive to playing?
For me it's 10PM - 1AM EST every day. (My real life's too busy for daytime video gaming.)
- I still don't know what tech we could use to do this? Ideally: Two players (or more) can play the game together online. They can also audibly communicate (I'm not doing video conferencing - if you all want to that's your deal). Others can watch the play in real time and perhaps audibly communicate as well, or at least watch a recording of the play itself.

Although Rastan 3 would require more set up on my end because my current MAME solution is an OG XBOX. For SNES games I found this interesting site: snes.party. Apparently it lets you play multiplayer SNES games in your browser. We could check it out and see if the performance is acceptable. 22:00 - 00:00 EST is too late for me on weekdays but I can do that on Friday or Saturday. I can game during those hours on Friday or Saturday. I like these ideas. For streaming the video I have an El Gato 60 capture card which could come in handy. I did some very shallow google research and found that any verified YouTube account can in fact livestream. If no future finds prove otherwise I'm willing to stream on the youtube channel where I dump my NES playthroughs and post the subsequent video there. How do you feel about audio-only Skype calls for voice communication? We can always "stress test" it and see. Is your daily gaming schedule mostly similar to Ex 's and toei 's, or can you play other times? Games I'm interested in playing for now: Super Mario 3: This is coming up on my "Year of the NES" playlist. I think it would be cool to do a coop play through of it with someone from else from HRG. Super Street Fighter 2: I think most of us played this growing up, so unless one of us is a secretly a SFII guru we should all be on pretty equal footing.

Yeah, that would be from 9-12 PM for me, and I could likely swing that. Mario 3 is a game that I'm very, very familiar with, so I'd be blazing through stuff left and right. So buyer beware. That being said, the way SMB3 plays would ensure that lag shouldn't be a major issue, since it wouldn't be simultaneous or competitive. Super SF II is one of those games where there are a few of us that are really good at it, but it's not my strongest fighting game. I'm best at SF Alpha 3 and Capcom vs. SNK 2.

How do you feel about audio-only Skype calls for voice communication? I'd use it if we -had- to. I'd rather us find a less OS invasive and bloated voice over IP application though. That's easy enough. What I'm still in the dark about is how we're going to actually play emulated games together over the internet. It looks like this is the main thing: www.kaillera.com/ But I haven't taken time to read up on how it works just yet.

anayo I'll try looking into online play through emulators this week. I'm a little wary of going through that website you posted, especially since it's SNES stuff. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

There are emulators out there that have Kaillera built in. I haven't used it, but that's probably going to be the best way to roll.

I can see that. Like it seems a little too good to be true. I'll have some time to investigate Kaillera later today or tomorrow. When I get informed on how it works I'll come back here and share what I found.
