Good news: today I was able to connect to my closest Kaillera server using Snesk9k. Bad news: the input latency is 5 frames. For turn based or strategy games would be fine, but as far as I'm concerned that's unacceptable for fast paced action games. I don't know whether playing in P2P mode would improve things. If so, at least two of us would need to get our computers set up for it at the same time to gauge how well it performs. The setup instructions I found are here: thenewnet.eu/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=337&Itemid=300While looking around online I also learned that on Nintendo Switch, the free NES games they give you if you pay for their online service all have online coop built in. Super Mario 3 is one of the included games, so that might be worth looking into if anyone wants. If there's no interest in trying that, I'm also open to playing other 10 year old games with online play built in, even if it's like a re-release of a Steam or GOG game. There is also something called X-Link Kai for tunneling PS2 and XBOX LAN games over the Internet. There is also something similar for playing online multiplayer Dreamcast games.

Yeah I mentioned that earlier and Toei had said he'd rather not. I'd be down to try it with someone else (perhaps Super Mario 3?). If anything, just to gauge if the latency is any better.

Isn't it likely that it'll be exactly the same? When I looked at snes party, it wanted me to load a rom from my own computer. So it's just running some kind of emulator, and it might be running kaillera, for all we know. Is 5 frames really that big a deal, though? That's just 1/20 of a second. I wonder if I'd even notice it.

Sorry I didn't mean to make it sound like I was some kind of latency snob. I just really don't think anyone here will find it to be a pleasant experience. It's right up in the latency range where you'll occasionally take damage and get killed because of the delay. I thought it would be too frustrating, but if you'd still like to try it I'm down for it.

Well, we could try with something where the gameplay is a bit looser, like a beat-'em-up, and see if it's a problem. I'd probably be available at some point this week-end if you want to try. Some of the beat-'em-ups I need to replay would be Cadillacs 'N Dinosaurs, Aliens VS Predators and Rastan 3 (all MAME), though I might be open to a Genesis or SNES game if you have one in mind. I just happen to have played the best ones too many times.

I mean, five frames won't feel great, but it's not unplayable by any stretch.
