Just stumbled across this: tss.asenheim.org/It's a site that lets you play a lot of '90s visual novels right in your browser. I tested it, did work. Most of these are ecchi/hentai stuff, but at least you know it exists now.

I don't know what it is about PC-98 illustrations that makes them look so good to me, even now. I honestly wish there was more non-hentai stuff - I'm not against sex in videogames on principle, but hentai games tend to have really dumb stories, and VNs are all story. But I'll check it out, maybe.

Those Japanese artists of the '90s were gods of pixel art. Unbelievable what they could accomplish with 16 colors, dithering, and pseudo-high res mode. I mean stuff like this: But yeah, the ecchi/hentai slant is par for the course. It was like that was expected back then as a default. Sex sells I guess? The real shame though is 99% of this stuff will never be translated into English.

Japanese PC gaming probably peaked with the MSX commercially, so I guess by the early '90s it needed a niche. Hence the hentai, which consoles couldn't do.
But yeah, those are some great pictures. Even the dithering looks great.

Neat. If there are some great non-h ones worth playing, I'd like to hear some recs.

I do not see myself actually ever playing old VN's like these, but heck yeah that is some SSS level pixel art and graphics that I love to appreciate. They don't make anime girls and mechanical parts like they used to.
