Do you have any unusual video gaming related behaviors that you'd like to share? Maybe something you only know yourself to do, but haven't seen anyone else?
-
I'll start with a simple one. I have a solid hatred of dirty game controllers. I cannot stand to use a controller that has crud embedded in it, or grime of any sort. As such I always, without fail, wash my hands thoroughly before playing with any of my controllers or handhelds. I also refuse to let anyone else use my particular controllers, and instead have guest controllers explicitly for that purpose. I 100% will not eat hand food while playing games, because I don't want any food particles getting into my controllers/handhelds. Because of this neurotic behavior, I have heavily used 20+ year old controllers that still look brand new.

Playing a series in order is a big one for me. Also, playing "original versions" (ie: not ports) if possible. This is probably why/how I ended up with a Famicom Disk System and MSX.

I only want to play 8 and 16 bit games on a CRT. To me, sprites don't look or feel right on a modern LCD or OLED or whatever.

When I get excited, I have to put my controller down and rub my hands together real fast. Haha. Its been a tick I've had since I was a kid. Whenever I'd do like the slot machines on Borderlands, or open up treasure chest in dungeons that are huge, or when I was breeding Chocobos on FF7. I wish I was joking.

I have a habit of making tea before I sit down to a long play session and then promptly forgetting it until four or five hours later when it's ice cold. I always promise myself I won't let it happen next time.

Whenever I'd do like the slot machines on Borderlands, or open up treasure chest in dungeons that are huge, or when I was breeding Chocobos on FF7. I wish I was joking. This makes me think of my favorite... in ANY turn based game, I press the action button again when my characters hit an enemy. Super Mario RPG made this a gimmick for buffing up your attack damage with the right timing... and it was my first RPG. So it embedded this theory into my brain for decades to come haha. It's just pure habit.
I'm very peculiar about my controllers too. Back in the day as a kid, they got used and abused all the time from friends and parties, but I always made sure I kept tabs on where they were so they never got mixed up. Later in life we started marking them on the back in some way or whatever. Nowadays though yeah, I don't really want anyone using my controllers, especially the Switch Pro's (they're like $70-80), and I think this is a universal rule with my circle of friends and everyone knows it without saying it, as they all do the same. In other cases the place I game at, my friend usually has two controllers for everyone to use anyways.

I'm not completely sure I have any real weird things that I do. I do tend to try to keep controllers clean, though, and typically wipe down any my company has used (which isn't often).
Other than that, I tend to have this overwhelming urge to hack my systems. I don't hack all of them, of course, especially stuff these days that have current storefronts and could get me banned, but hacking them often brings some quite tangible benefits, even when staying completely legit. Also, I tend to use Chrono Trigger. Gotta run it on any device possible.

Something similar happens to me. I'll be interested in a single game in a series and I'll end up playing every game in that series even if I only really love the one I was interested in originally. I crave the context I suppose.

I've actually bounced around franchises a lot in my gaming career, but I do become a completionist in the long run if I really like a series. I still don't let it completely write things off for me though. Like more recently, I just couldn't totally get into Dragon Quest 1-3 and tried various versions from the NES, GB, to the SNES, etc. But I jumped over to DQ5 on the DS and it clicked. I'll keep playing more of them and with further context of the series, I might be able to go back and appreciate the earlier entries more now. This has happened a few times. Heck, Mega Man 2, Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 4, etc were my first games I played and owned in those franchises, haha.
I do like the historical approach though and generally go for that nowadays. But if it's a huge series, if one doesn't work, I'll still consider checking some others out. If the story/characters are directly connected though then yeah, that complicates things.

Here's another one of mine. I can't stand for discs in game cases to be oriented incorrectly. By that I mean I want the discs to be perfectly straight, with the label in the 12 o'clock position. I hate it when I open a game case and the disc label is crooked or upside down. I always put the disc back with its label 100% straight every time.
I also have a thing about how I hold discs. Index in the spindle hole, thumb on the outside edge, always. That's how you hold a disc. Thou shalt not touch a disc's reading surface. My wrath and vengeance upon all the greasy finger smudgers of the world.
