I think a lot of them would have ended up in various PC gaming magazines. I have some old ones that advertised the more violent games, as well as some other adult-oriented titles. You had stuff like PC Gamer, PC Games, Computer Gaming World, etc.

I mean I certainly never saw any TV ads for Duke Nukem 3D... There was an ad on TV for the console port: From what I can recall, Sarge is right, ads targeting adults were generally in magazines. Computer games were obviously advertised in computer gaming, or computer hardware, magazines. But magazines like Playboy or papers like The Wall Street Journal would have ads for games targeting adults. Unfortunately a lot of these ads would use "sex sells" as motivation a few (NSFW) examples... Nintendo's "Gameboy Advance SP for Men" ad: Nintendo's "Seriously Distracting" Game Boy ad: SNK's American Psycho Neo Geo ad: SEGA's infamous Saturn ad: Domark's Davis Cup ad: You get the point. Some ads were more SFW though... Nintendo's Game Boy "Have you had your fun today?" adult ads: SEGA Genesis ad targeting adult buyers: Neo Geo Pocket anti-Game Boy ad: Stuff like that.

Ex I suspected they advertised those in magazines. Your post confirms that. As I had posted elsewhere I was oblivious of gaming media in 1996 but I guess that doesn't negate its existence. XD Also now that you mention that Duke 3D console port, there was a TV commercial for Doom on Atari Jaguar. I also remember in 1997 or so going to the mall and taking a little Sears brochure back home with me. It had a Sega Saturn section inside it and featured Duke 3D as one of the showcase games. Sarge That makes sense. I never saw Duke 3D covered in any "mainstream" media. But once around 1997 or so my Dad and I were at the mall in some kind of electronics store (possibly EB games, I don't remember 100%) where they had Duke Nukem action figures. I really wanted one, so he got me the Duke figure. The stupid thing broke after a week or two because it was so cheaply made. Anyway the point is that stuff seemed to get coverage in places where enthusiasts would look.

I suspected they advertised those in magazines. Your post confirms that. I just found out about a Game Boy title I didn't know existed thanks to one of those "Have you had your fun today?" ads. The second (low resolution one) says: "Sure, you did everything you were supposed to do today. That's what adults do. Because they're responsible. They want people to like them. And give them paychecks. And then one day they go berserk, and spend money they don't have on a car they can't pronounce. Don't let this happen to you. Get your fun in easy daily doses with Game Boy, the personal game-playing system from Nintendo. But it's a toy, you're thinking. I couldn't possibly be interested. Oh yeah? Golf, interested? Golf on Game Boy requires the judgement and skill of the real thing, and you can play it anywhere. So you can get in a quick nine on the way to work, without having to tell your boss your car broke down. But golf is just one of over a hundred cartridges to choose from. There's a full range of sports, puzzle and adventure games as well. And the first cartridge is on us. It's Tetris, the jigsaw puzzle that fights back. Look it's no secret having fun everyday makes you a happier person. If that doesn't appeal to you, find someone who's not as hopelessly grown-up as you are, get them a Nintendo Game Boy system and stand back. If all that fun still leaves you cold, we remind you, there's a day planner for Game Boy as well. Have you had your fun today?"So I was wondering what the day planner was. I think they meant this: That lead me to find another Game Boy app. Before the days of internet and smartphones, having this in a mobile format would have been useful:

Haha, that Gameboy ad is amazing! I seem to recall the Gameboy being such a phenomenon that there was a lot of what would now be apps for your phone designed for it.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to uncover by starting this topic. By the time I was old enough to get one, the Game Boy had cemented it's reputation as a kids' toy. But obviously when the concept was brand new some advertising think tank saw fit to market it to grown ups.

Its kind of a toss up for me. I actually had a few relatives that played pretty religiously into their adulthood. One of my first memories of going to my Uncles was watching him play Castlevania on SNES and then watching Terminator 2 with him. Haha.
My dad wasn't a huge gamer, but he'd sit down and play games like Golf (on NES), Cyber Tiger on PSOne, etc with me. I'd catch him hopping on my NES every once and a while and playing Tetris too.
Otherwise a lot of my friend's older brothers and such would play. 18+ years old. I remember we'd just sit in amazement and watch them beat games like Star Fox 64 and stuff while we could barely get anyways.
Lastly, I heard from my Dad my Grandma really loved Pac-Man. Like staying up until 1am in the morning while the kids were sleeping playing.
But yes, as a kid I felt like games were targeted specifically for me and my friends now that I look back. Like the other guys said, I felt like as I grew they were aiming for us as adults too. Consoles like Xbox felt like they were aimed more for older kids too while the Wii aimed for kids. Sony kind of stayed in the middle.
There's my two cents guys! GREAT topic!

My dad used to play Atari with me. When we got the NES he ran into the first goomba in 1-1 of Super Mario Bros., proclaimed it was stupid and never played a video game again. One of the greatest rage quits I have ever witnessed.
