My dad used to play Atari with me. When we got the NES he ran into the first goomba in 1-1 of Super Mario Bros., proclaimed it was stupid and never played a video game again. One of the greatest rage quits I have ever witnessed. LOL, 30 years later... has he seriously still not tried gaming again?
My mom would just run off cliffs and yell "Poop!", she still likes Tetris and random stuff though.

I just found out about a Game Boy title I didn't know existed thanks to one of those "Have you had your fun today?" ads.
This is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping to uncover by starting this topic. By the time I was old enough to get one, the Game Boy had cemented it's reputation as a kids' toy. But obviously when the concept was brand new some advertising think tank saw fit to market it to grown ups. This morning I stumbled across a 90's TV ad for Gameboy where they're trying to market the Gameboy to dads: This really goes against the narrative of video games being kids' toys in the 90's... It would be interesting to hear an interview or something with the marketing people behind this.

anayoYeah it's clear from what we've dug up with the magazine ads and videos, Nintendo pushed hard for a short while in the early '90s to get adults interested in the Game Boy. The whole "Have you had your fun today?" ad campaign I mean. It would be interesting to read an interview with the team behind that failed marketing campaign. Nintendo was basically marketing the Game Boy to two different demographics simultaneously at that time. They weren't able to successfully do that with a handheld until the DS though, many years later.

I remember reading a feature about Tetris where it said that lots of adults bought a Game Boy just to play it in Japan, so probably they were trying to replicate that. Of course, adults were probably a little more open to gaming in general in Japan, even though it still skewed very clearly towards kids in those days.

What is wrong with that man? No one hold a Neo Geo arcade pad that way.
