Yes I did. Then, as I said, I went back and did it from scratch because I didn't want it sullying my victory.
Technically, it wouldn't have mattered much, since it was at the very start of the battle, and the castle is actually quite quick to navigate. It was a moment of weakness at the end of a long play session that turned longer because it bugged me so badly.
If you want to save-state at the start of the Tyson fight, I wouldn't blame you. It would save you a lot of time putting in the password over and over.

Nah I was just messin' with you man. You earned that victory. If you want to save-state at the start of the Tyson fight, I wouldn't blame you. It would save you a lot of time putting in the password over and over. I did indeed already save-state at the start of the Tyson fight. Putting in the password over and over got old quick. Being able to instantly resume to that fight start, is the only thing good about not playing this particular game on the real hardware. Because otherwise I'd rather play this on an actual NES on a CRT, for reasons you already understand.
I will not use save states to beat him though. I either beat Kid Dynamite fair 'n square, or I don't at all.

Ha, should have known.
If you hit issues, you may want to try RetroArch and their lag-reduction stuff. That being said, the first time I beat him was on an XBOX, on my old Sony Bravia LCD, so it's doable to beat him without a CRT. It just takes a lot more luck on the front end, since you have to anticipate and try to recover if you screw up.

Okay, I'm NOT counting this as my legit win. But I was able to beat Mike Tyson by running the game at 50% speed: So the point of this exercise was for me to learn Mike's tells better, and how to counteract them better. I learned a lot taking him down at 50% speed. Next I'll try to take him down at 75% speed. Did you know it's possible to beat Mike in 6 punches?:

That's pretty ridiculous. I knew there were points you could get an instant knockdown on him. I should really learn how to take advantage of those knockdowns a bit better.

No save states in Gradius V son...
I got to the final boss just now. The end is nigh but I'll have to do another run. You keep unlocking credits for every hour played as I mentioned earlier in that MLIG review. I think that's a fair and awesome reward system for tough as nails shmups. You still have to put in the work and not get screwed over like I did a few times this run, losing my Options. In the later stages once you start getting smacked around, losing Speed, Missiles, Options, etc, can completely mess you up and sink tons of lives.
What's funnier, something I noticed yesterday as well since I've gotten the first three stages down almost perfectly... when you're doing SO good, a new enemy type comes out of nowhere and tries to steal your Options. So right when you get good and are on a roll, Gradius V laughs at you and tries to troll you. Today I figured out how to kind of dodge the dang enemy though and once he misses, he leaves. But he always likes creeping up right before the stage 3 boss, so that's a real pain.
Did I mention stage 6's end is ANOTHER boss rush?
The final stage is a real thrill and awesome stuff. Puts everything to the test. I should have this done in another run or two I hope...

Ex : I don't know if I'll play anything else for this month's theme after this. (might save Vagrant Story for December or when the mood really strikes). But I'm thinking I could maybe spend the rest of the month tackling Shattered Soldier. I got curious and it apparently has a time played reward system as well: "Normal Mode - You have 3 continues and 3 lives per continue, but you can access all of the missions and get any ending, if you are good enough. After playing a certain amount of time (see part VII of this FAQ), you will permanently gain an extra life, for a total of 4 lives per continue. This only applies to Normal Mode." Might just be one extra life though... hard to tell.

Gradius V has been conquered, on EASY. Which is like Dante Must Die mode compared to the norm. I never fell back on Very Easy, so that felt good. Grinded it out for 5h 38m. So that was a decent amount of work for a shmup run. I'll check out Normal tomorrow, but I'm more than content and it's already written down in my books as beaten. Like I've been saying in this thread, despite the intensity of this game and the anxiety it gives me, it really is a blast to play. Just feels great, looks great, everything about it is awesome and this felt supremely rewarding to finish. Beating it unlocks "Loop 2" or something and a weapon edit mode, letting you change up your power ups with a bunch of stuff not even available from the get go. Wonder if dunpeal2064 ever played this one.
The first hour of this is essentially what my route was like, maybe someone here will be bored or interested enough to watch and see what I survived.

Gradius V has been conquered, on EASY. Congratulations man. Sounds like "Easy" was still quite hard. I'm sure being a Treasure jam this shmup was fun despite the challenge level (or maybe enhanced by it). I wonder if he's still alive.
