Yeah, I see The Guardian Legend on the list, and it's amazing. Almost all of Compile's stuff was.

Together Compile and Technosoft contain the vast majority of my favorite retro console shmups.

On NES, I have to give shout outs to Konami and Kid.
Konami for: Life Force, Twin Bee series, Parodius series, Gradius series, and especially Crisis Force.
Kid for the "make your own shmup kit" Dezaemon, and the outrageously awesome Summer Carnival '92: Recca.

The first time I played Recca, I was legitimately amazed by how frantic it was for an 8-bit shmup.

I'm a huge fan of shmups, and I have a particular interest in both console-exclusive (including arcade) shooters, and arcade-to-home ports that end up different enough to be worth playing, or sometimes end up even better than their arcade version. Since I am more than happy to boot up Mame, I find straight ports or slightly-worse-than ports to have little use to me personally. Since I've been focusing on it, I'll share some SNES/SFC favorites, and later on I'll take a stab at some other consoles. Don't want the post to be too huge. Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
This game is fucking killer. Beautiful sprite work, 3 characters to pick from, each with a ship that transforms to a mech to provide different shot types, and the ability to steal enemy ships as options to fight along side you (Even rather large ones!). Fantastic music, great pacing in difficulty, just an all around killer. BiometalIts Giga Wing on the SNES! Insanely frantic, pseudo bullet hell horizontal shooter, with a shield mechanic to let you survive the onslaught. This game isn't so much about dodging, as it is completely wrecking havok. Sadly, whenever I used to see this game mentioned, it was in regard to the 2Unlimited OST, which is a mixture of (imo not so great) old dance beats you've heard a million times. The original SFC game, however, has its own unique OST that suits the game much better for me (No knock if you like that 2U stuff though). When I see "Underrated SNES", Biometal is one of the first games to come to mind. AxelayThis game is weird. When console shmups are brought up, Axelay is usually mentioned, so its clearly somewhat popular. But, usually the first thing said about it is negative, that its vertical scrolling sections are dumb because Mode 7. Lets be honest, though, a vertical scrolling shooter using mode 7 on the SNES had to happen. Mode 7 was used for everything. Its a miracle to me that, unlike many Mode 7-focused games, Axelay still plays really well. Epic score, pretty neat weapons load out, and you get both vertical and horizontal gameplay! Its the little things in Axelay that really impress me, like the spider boss slowing you when you fly through his webbing, or the boss that randomizes which weapon you have selected. For the era, ideas like these were rare in shooters, and to both implement those and have Mode 7 as a main attraction, and it still not bog the game down is impressive to me. I'll try to stick to 3 per post, but I spent several years literally only playing shmups, so I could write walls about them.

Scrambled Valkyrie is easily my favorite Super Famicom shmup. It helps that Macross is one of my favorite anime but even without that it's a really fantastic game.
