Anybody's got an entry-level shmup to suggest? I played Twinkle Tale for a while and I kind of liked it. It doesn't have to be cute, just something not too hard to get started.

It depends on what style (Vertical or Horizontal, OG or crazy bullet hell stuff) you prefer, since there are great entry-level games in each. Aside the great suggestions already mentioned, I'll recommend:
Lords of Thunder (Horizontal OG, SCD/TCD): This game kicks ass. Even having played it enough to guarantee a 1cc when I boot it up, I still return to it. Epic OST, really fun weapon system, and it is available on both Sega CD and Turbo CD (Sega CD ver is easier)
Fire Shark (Vertical OG, Genesis): Toaplan goodness. This is bread and butter vertical shooting, and the Genesis conversion is really solid. Crazy weapons, and fun sniper-tank dodging. On Normal, the game is pretty chill and you'll likely clear it in no time. It does have a Hard mode that amps things up a bit too, so its comfy to get into, but offers more if interested.
Mushihimesama Futari (Vertical Bullet Hell): Biased as all hell, as this is one of my favorite games ever made, but it also offers some really solid entry-level gaming that still represents what is fun about bullet hell shooters. I'd recommend Novice Ultra to start. Again, this game has so many modes that it offers a warm welcome, but its top end is insane.
Deathsmiles (Hori Bullet Hell, X360): This game is super cute, and tons of fun. Lots of silly bosses and neat themes throughout, tons of bullets, but its very do-able. This is a lot of people's first bullet hell 1cc.

If you're willing to credit-feed, DoDonPachi is pretty fun.

Thought we had this thread! Reviving... Not to overshadow toei's awesome personal shmup journey, but I don't think we need to overwhelm him with suggestions and all that, so this is for some more general talk again. The Switch has a lot of Neogeo games and a few shmups on the eshop that look really cool to me, have any of you guys played these? Pulstar Alpha Mission II Blazing Star
Apparently Pulstar is like a straight up R-Type clone:
