Today it's no big deal that video game characters can talk. But in 16-bit video video games it was nothing short of miraculous to hear speech coming from a video game. I can't imagine how I'd explain to someone who grew up on modern games how spectacular it was to hear "SAY-GAAH" at the start of Sonic the Hedgehog. However, the audio quality wasn't always that crystal clear. Sometimes I could tell the character was supposed to be saying something, I just had no idea what. The most fun byproduct of this was when I would make up my own interpretation of what they were saying.
Whenever Axel from Streets of Rage 2 would do a powerful uppercut, I always thought he was saying "Revved up punch!" I knew that wasn't really what he was saying, but I would say it out loud anyway. Pretty soon my friend next door who would play coop with me starting calling it that, too.
This enemy in Comix Zone sounded like he was saying "Rocket ass!" Is there something wrong with me? I hope not...
In Mario 64 whenever you enter a stage, I thought Mario was saying "Mt. Pickles!" I later posted this somewhere (maybe Racketboy) and someone pointed out that he was saying, "Let's a-go." I think I prefer that to "Mt. Pickles". (But please don't ruin "revved up punch" for me, I have a feeling that's better than whatever Axel is actually saying.)
Did anyone else do this while playing 8 and 16 bit games with speech in them? I guess newer games count too, since I included an N64 title on here... Just wondering if there's any similar funny stories out there about this.

anayo Not 100% sure, but I've long thought Axel says "Bare Knuckle!", which is also the Japanese title as I know you know.

Everyone there is debating whether it's "bare knuckle" or "grand upper". I'm leaning toward the latter because the way he enunciates "upper" sounds to me like how a Japanese person would say it ("ap-paa"). I'm still calling it "revved up punch" though.

To add to your SM64 one, here’s another that I’m fairly certain most people misheard:
Turns out Mario was saying, “So long king Bowser!” But 7 year-old me certainly didn’t hear that!

I always thought it was "bare knuckle", but apparently it's grand upper?
The stage start in SM64 I always heard as "let's take off".
I have no idea what the heck that is supposed to be in Comix Zone.

I never thought the enemy in Comix Zone was saying actual words, I figured it was just some random alien sounds. For SOR2, Grand Upper makes sense.

Is it "Oh my car?"...
Or "Oh my God!"...

I've never heard that one before, that's really surreal.
