Hey hey people Ex here with this month's theme... This Club Retro is about finishing pre-played games sitting around in your backlog library. If it's 10 years old or older, and it's been placed on the back burner, that's a prime game for this month's theme. If you don't have anything half-finished lying around, then feel free to just play an old game that's been sitting in your collection for way too long. - Edit: Looking at my HRG-compliant picks... Final Fantasy X and Metroid Prime 2 look plausible. Though I'd have to restart MP2 at this point, as my save is from years ago, and I don't remember what I was doing in it. Still if I'm ever gonna play MP3, gotta knock MP2 out right?

I'm going to rock that Legaia 2 run, then I think I'll shoot for something shorter. I'm almost positive that I've never fully beaten either Mega Man X2 or MMX3. I know I haven't beaten MMX7, but... well, it ain't great.
Also, yes, feel free to play something you've had for coon's ages if you don't care to dredge up old save files like I apparently do at times. If I'm early in a game, I'll just restart, but throwing away 30+ hour saves? No sir.

And you're the Lord of Platformers?!?!
As for beating MMX7, I can't tell if that levels someone down or up in life... I've only beaten the prologue stage. That was enough for me.
I almost feel like my replay of Chrono Trigger should apply to this thread. I double checked when I beat Dragon Quest 1-2 SNES and that was back in AUGUST! So I've been casually playing CT for like 3-4 months and the longer time goes the harder it gets to pickup again. I really don't know what it is with this version, but it's definitely not my preferred one.

Ha, mine's the other way around. I've got a poor, pitiful mid-game Dragon Quest II save just sitting there.
So some progress with Legaia 2. Took out a boss in the Wind Tower, and have unlocked the final area. I spent some time, err, gaming the system and getting ridiculous amounts of money, and started upgrading some of my equipment. I need more materials to really make it worthwhile, though. I nuked the first boss of the final area as well; it's only vulnerable to Mystic Arts and Origin attacks (a magic version of your combos and magic attacks, respectively). One mystic art from Lang brought the boss down (in conjunction with a strength boost from Blessing and cooked food). I mean, daaaaang. I don't think there's anything out there that tells you how to pull them, though. It's apparently very specific: only use 7 Art Blocks, 100 AP, 100 MP, and HP has to be less than 50%. I admit I looked it up just to see how effective it might be, and was not disappointed.
I wonder if I shouldn't do this the old-fashioned way... feels almost too overpowered.

I never hear much about Legaia 2 vs the first one. Is 2 pretty different?

It's similar in some ways, but I think it's a smoother experience all around.
A couple of the little quirks and changes are coming back to me. Firstly, you've got a system that's a little like FFIX in that you can learn some skills from accessories that level up. They stay on the equipment, though, but that also means you can move it around as needed.
There's also a crafting system here to upgrade weapons, which is the only way to get the best stuff in the game. You can do okay with the purchased weapons, though.
Encounter rate can sometimes be highly variable, but I don't think it's anything at the level of the first game, and there are skills to reduce the rate as well as turn them off completely, at least with this last accessory I found. I'd need to level it up a lot, though, to unlock it.
You don't earn spells from enemies anymore, and you don't level them up through battle, either. Your "Origin", which is like a guardian spirit, levels up and learns magic attacks instead. That means everyone is elementally keyed compared to the first game, but it's a small price to pay to get rid of that tedium.
It does seem like it got overlooked back in the day. It was released over here under the "Fresh Games" label, which was part of Eidos. They published "quirky" games, like Mr. Mosquito. None of them sold well, and they retired the label after using it for R-Type Final.

I know pretty much nothing about Legaia 2.
-
I'm going to roll my play of Forever Kingdom into this thread to start things off. I haven't touched it in almost a week due to real life stuff. FK is unfinished business at this point, and old enough to fit the rules. Time to go boot it up...
Edit:
Well now I know a few things about Legaia 2.

I love Quake, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. I have never entirely beaten Quake, Shadow Warrior, or Blood. I might not complete all those in December, but I'd like to try to.

I have never entirely beaten Quake, Shadow Warrior, or Blood. You can do it man! I can at least vouch for Quake, certainly loved that one back in the late '90s. I'd be surprised if it hasn't aged decently. - I put about two hours into Forever Kingdom tonight. I don't think the game clock is accurate in this one. It says I have about 5 hours 45 minutes. I'd swear it's more like 7 hours by now invested. I'm wondering if this game doesn't count time in menus and cut scenes towards the clock. Anyway, checking a walkthrough's table of contents, I'm currently at the bolded part: 4.1 - Beginning 4.2 - Forsaken Village 4.3 - Chasm of Tranquility 4.4 - Cave of Testing 4.5 - Testing Grounds 4.6 - Mist Shrine 4.7 - Shrine Halls 4.8 - Shrine Courtyard 4.9 - Buried Cavern 4.10 - Canyon of Defile 4.11 - Land of the Dead 4.12 - Lake of Dreams 4.13 - Palace 4.14 - King's Throne 4.15 - Hall of Memories 4.16 - Ruins of Frost 4.17 - Ruins of Fire 4.18 - Garden of Harmony 4.19 - Endless Waterfall 4.20 - Misty Cavern 4.21 - Hall of Wandering 4.22 - City of Lost Hope 4.23 - City of Hope 4.24 - Hall of Wandering 4.25 - Hall of the Banished 4.26 - Forgotten Valley 4.27 - Sanctuary 4.28 - Final Bosses So I'm a little past halfway at present.

Yeah it's annoying how inconsistent some games are with time tracking. Hard to tell if menu's and other misc things pause it or not sometimes. I tend to assume all games are a little longer than what they track. anayo: I finally played through all of Quake and the two expansions in 2016, when Doom 4 dropped and back to back. That somehow worked out tremendously, as new Doom felt a bit more like it pulled from Quake anyways, and I had an absolute blast with Quake. I played with the Dark Places source port. Just had to make sure I had all the music files in check so they worked, that seems to be an issue with some people. I think I had to pull files off some old Quake Collection I had, so those discs came in handy. GOG has the games packaged better than Steam, though I'm betting you have some discs and old computer to play this on. As for Blood, well I beat that one this year! Was thinking of getting back to it soon and playing the Death Wish community pack. I want to like Shadow Warrior but I always bounce off of it pretty fast, plus there doesn't really seem to be any good new source port. The redux one has issues with mouse aiming and stuff. Then playing it in Dosbox is a bit clunky. It seems like a poor man's DN3D overall to me anyways.
