Yeah, glad you mentioned that. I'd rather have them all on disc. If it goes cheap enough, I'll go with a digital copy, though. It's $15 right now, but it's been at just above $6.
I think I've hit the final world in Gex, but I got a bit frustrated and decided to quit. Maybe that was a bad idea, given that I'd accrued a ton of lives. Of course, if necessary, I should be able to jump back into other stages to beef those up if needed.

The original Gex did seem pretty solid when I played some last year. I guess it's not too long?
The 3D sequels sadly do not look like they held up very well at all, lol. Major fog/draw distance limitations.

I kept telling myself I'd find a dirt cheap PS Vita and it never happened. lol! Yeah, it got so bad I had to import one from Japan.

Sarge Any particular reason you went with Gex first? Random curiosity or did you already have a legit copy sitting around? I'm gonna start playing some kind of platformer Monday. Since mascot platformers are generally short and simple, I think I can squeeze some in this month during downtime with work. (I'll just play Lufia at night till I finish it.) - I personally own two Vitas. One is an OLED model, the other an LCD model. I bought both of them brand new. The OLED model was bought via Walmart's online store back in 2014. The LCD model I bought from Amazon back in 2018. I paid normal retail price for both, neither were scalper priced. I imagine nowadays Vitas are pretty expensive though, especially if you wanted a new OLED model. I predict years down the road the Vita will be a hot retro collectible, since it was kind of ignored (in the west anyway) during its time.

I think it was that someone mentioned it earlier, and I saw it on sale at GOG. I've also had some interest in the game for quite some time, just never got around to playing it.

I thought I was going to be cute and try to play Toejam & Earl 2, but then looking up videos of it shows that it's at least ~5 hours long and that's probably recordings of people who know the game pretty well. I don't think I can stomach THAT much of this one and the weird fetch quest item collecting gimmick.
I liked that one back in the day at least. I was too young to even understand what was going on in the first game and knew nothing of "rogue" elements then. Never sounded like the second game had that many fans in comparison.

I've heard Toejam & Earl III is not actually that bad. But yeah, the second game is weird. It's not a "fetch quest" at all, though, it's basically a searching game. And yeah, it's extremely long for a Genesis platformer.
After wrestling a bit with Mednafen, an emulator so user-unfriendly that even the frontends suck, I got Astal running. I don't know if I'll finish considering my limited patience for platformers, but man is it pretty. It's crazy.

toei: Have you tried using RetroArch? While it's not the most user-friendly software, the Saturn core (Beetle) is based on Mednafen.

I did, but it was acting weird and I didn't feel like researching what the problem was. I'd set up Mednafen before, so I had a good idea what I needed to do to set up controls and a proper fullscreen mode.
