Argh, I'm trying not to read too much or look at too many screenshots. The SFC version of DQ3 is still on my list of "must play" JRPGs. You chose a great ride Xeogred.

Xeogred You know, the game that looks the most like DQ3 SNES is DQ6 OG. Anyway, I won't tell you what happens next, but I'll just mention I'm pretty sure DQ3 is the first game ever to pull this particular stunt.

Yeah, sorry if that was a little spoilery. I'll hide any other late game screencaps. It doesn't beat DQ4 for me, but it's for sure my second favorite of the first five. It was fascinating to play the first two, even if it was the SNES versions. The first game felt somewhat alien compared to DQ4-DQ5 in a way to me, seeing its humble beginnings. DQ2 made huge leaps and had figured most things out, but there was still room for refinement and evolution... DQ3 is absolutely in the same family as DQ4-DQ5 and truly seems like the one that locked down the DRAGON QUEST blueprints for the series. DQ3 is a pure unadulterated dungeon crawler adventure and it's dang good at what it does. From there depending on preference, I guess one (like myself) could say that DQ4 took these masterwork blueprints and perfected them, but it really feels like DQ3 set the foundation. I'm wondering if I like this more than FF3 (NES). I mean maybe that's a little unfair comparing it to the SNES version of DQ3, but I have to imagine the original game is pretty advanced and refined itself for an NES game. Whereas FF3 still had its bugs and faulty experimentation (I think half the Jobs or more were pretty useless).
EDIT: toei: Yeah, I just may have to check out DQ3-DQ4 (NES) and DQ6 (SNES) someday. I'm pretty optimistic about DQ6 ranking highly for me too, so it could be cool to check out the other versions of the ones I like a lot at some point.

Yeah, you still got a ways to go, Xeogred. You're gonna like it, I promise. I honestly don't know which I like better, Dragon Quest III or IV. They're both fantastic games, and I'm guessing you can see why I loved the series so much back in the day, even if they didn't have some of the creature comforts of the modern ports. I'd absolutely put DQIII NES on the same level as FFIII NES. Even with the nicer graphics, the core experience is shockingly similar. And I definitely think you're gonna enjoy DQVI as well. I believe DQVI and DQIII SNES share the same engine, with the remake coming out after DQVI. I'd probably put the SNES game, at least in the looks department, above the DS remake. It's just gorgeous artwork, with clean pixel art.

Yep, that's a good one, too. Mainly based on the SNES version, but with Monster Medals to collect if you want. Visual downgrade of course, but they kept the animated monsters, which is great.

Even though I'm much more of a Dragon Quest fan overall, I actually prefer Final Fantasy 3 over DQ3. But DQ4 has them both beat.

Was thinking of Dragon Quest all day today at work. I'm actually leaning more towards SFC DQ6 next now... maybe even right after I beat DQ3. It seems right to finally play an original version of one of these and cap off with another stellar looking SNES installment. Even though it came out before the DQ3 remake, it looks more advanced, maybe even has new features over DQ4-DQ5 as well? Which would make sense with its placement in the series and I'd guess the DQ3 remake just went for a more faithful redux on the original NES game. The DQ6 music seems really good too and more energetic. It'll be interesting to jump back to another later middle era title after DQ3.
Still glad I got the DS version though, I could hit that up down the road. Maybe before I tackle DQ7, lol.
I was thinking DQ8 next, but now I'm kind of set on SFC DQ6. Then I'll be jumping around, probably just right to DQ8 and then DQ11. I'd probably have to space those out big time for sure though, they seem super long. Though I know DQ7 is the longest, even the 3DS version... that'll be after I beat all these, haha. I'll probably grab DQ9 at some point, but at a glance it doesn't look very appealing to me.

Yeah, definitely take a break before DQ7. It's still a solid game overall, IMO, but if you don't want to burn out it's better if you're a little hungry for DQ when you get to it. And 9 is definitely low priority, though for a DS RPG I guess it's pretty good. The reason I'd support hitting up 6 next is that you would complete the NES & SNES generations by doing that, and of course it's the closest thing to both DQ3 SNES and DQ4. So when you get to 8, you'll be able to fully appreciate the jump to full 3D, etc.

Yeah, I probably just have one more DQ in me for the year, which will more than likely be DQ6. Or I could hit up DQ8 later this year. I'm sure I'll spread out all the newer ones a fair bit though. This is the third summer in a row where I've hit up a DQ game or two and it's been a nice little trend I've made for myself.
