The proprietary Memory Card prices were utterly dumb. And I agree that took a real ding out of the Vita's sales. A lot of people were unhappy with that idea and ignored the Vita outright as a result. Sony shot themselves in the foot with that one.
According to my HLTB I haven't beaten a Vita game since 2020. Now that's just dumb. Definitely gotta give that handheld some love this year.

The PSP managed to become "cool" in popular culture in a way that the Vita didn't. Don't ask me why, I wasn't paying any attention to modern gaming whatsoever at the time. But I remember both my gamer friends and random girls I worked with who just play "the car game" and "that game with the guy" having PSPs. All of us in our early 20s at the time. So the marketing just worked to make it something cool to have. I even bought one, though it was later in its lifespan. I have a special fondness for the system. A lot of its exclusives are thoroughly mediocre, but that's more due to lack of developer ambition. The potential is obvious. In terms of tech, I find it much more impressive than the DS, especially since I couldn't care less about the dual screen gimmick. That's why I'd like to play a few more of the big exclusives (or originals, since several of them got remakes later) that originated on it.
I have basically no idea what's good on the Vita, I don't know if I've ever looked into its library.

The PSP managed to become "cool" in popular culture in a way that the Vita didn't. Very much so. Back in the mid '00s I knew a few people IRL who owned PSPs. Even people who weren't really gamers, they would more use it for its ancillary functions (that people would use smartphones for today). A lot of people bought the PSP solely for its UMD video function alone, basically a portable DVD player that fit in one's pocket. The Vita didn't have that angle. Basically Sony marketed the PSP more like a multi-function device -rather than just (for its time) powerful handheld- and that approach improved sales dramatically. But by the time the Vita came around, larger touchscreen smartphones had filled that niche. >That's why I'd like to play a few more of the big exclusives There's definitely more PSP games I'd like to see your informed opinion on. Especially the PSP games with high production values that really tried to push the handheld's architecture. >no idea what's good on the Vita That would be an interesting discussion. I wager the majority of the Vita's library would mean little to your tastes, honestly, but there's a few that may intrigue you. Granted, a good 90% of the Vita's once-exclusive library has been ported to PC, PS4, and Switch through the years since. There's still a fair amount of exclusives (this list hasn't been updated in a while mind): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_Vita-only_games Remember that for years the Vita DID have a LOT of exclusives, before publishers started porting everything left and right. Maybe someday I'll make a list of all the physical Vita games I have. Although, in the past few years, I have sold off some of my Vita games. Either games I already beat and didn't plan to beat again, or games I bought "enhanced ports" of for PS4/Switch, thus sold the original. According to my HLTB, the three Vita games I rated highest after beating thus far been: Ys: Memories of Celceta, Yomawari: Night Alone, and Gal*Gun: Double Peace. All three of those have been ported to PC in the years since: store.steampowered.com/app/587110/Ys_Memories_of_Celceta/store.steampowered.com/app/477870/Yomawari_Night_Alone/store.steampowered.com/app/511740/GalGun_Double_Peace/

DS was more popular and had better exclusives, but you're absolutely right about the tech, it's way, way more beefy. It's something like a PS1.5, leaning more towards the PS2, where the DS is more PSX/N64 level. Not that devs didn't manage to pull some slick stuff with it, but I remember folks thinking the PSP was going to wipe the floor with the DS because of the hardware disparity.

I hope they don't intend to add a third technological disparity tier to their current generation.
Handheld specifically engineered for Game Pass?

I hope they don't intend to add a third technological disparity tier to their current generation. Gotta make sure the next Halo works on three different generations.
Looking forward to 16K resolution and Raytracing, Xbox games running at a blistering 10fps. Can't wait to hear how many TERRAFLOPS this next thing will be.

This tracks with rumors that they're potentially giving up on this generation and just jumping ahead with the next. It would force Sony's hand to some degree, as whatever they release would likely outclass Sony's system pretty handily. But at the same time, the market leader is going to dictate the dev target, so outside of higher resolutions or more stable framerates, I'm not sure you'd get anything truly mind-blowing. (This gen is already a pretty middling tech upgrade, despite the increase in computing power. Diminishing returns and all that.)
