So here's the post ShakeWell had on Twitter. I know we've done these sorts of thought experiments before, but I still find them fun. The M82, if y'all aren't aware, was a store demo unit that Nintendo had out there for the NES that could slot in 12 games to demo. I actually got to play one a few times in a local Walmart, and was really disappointed when they removed it! I'd love to get my hands on one, but they're quite hard to come by.
My list, along with commentary on each:
Kirby's Adventure - My favorite platformer on NES. Yes, even more than SMB3. It's gorgeous, varied, and ridiculously fun.
Super Mario Bros. 3 - I used to dislike this game because of how wildly popular it was to the detriment of everything else with my friends. And I had a cousin that wanted me to beat it every time I came over. But now, I recognize its greatness.
Tecmo Super Bowl - Y'all, this might be the game I've actually got the most time into, and I'm generally not a big sports gamer. I've won the Super Bowl with every single team in the game!
The Guardian Legend - Maybe the best fusion of Zelda-style exploration and shooter out there. It was a fantastic play when I burned through it again earlier this year.
Double Dragon II: The Revenge - This is the best brawler on NES, easily. I don't even mind the platforming! I love Double Dragon's brand of "meaty" combat with its varied moveset.
Contra - I waffled between this and Super C, as I've really come to appreciate the latter. But I'm still giving it to the original. The two NES entries are still my favorite in the series.
Zelda II - I've overcome my love-hate-love relationship from my teenage years to put this in the upper echelon. Probably still the best example of the side-scrolling adventure style on NES.
Crystalis - I'm taking this over Zelda. Fantastic ARPG that just edges out Willow on my list.
Jackal - One of the best overhead run-and-guns of all time, and way better than the arcade game, just like Contra.
Bionic Commando - I remember being nervous about the controls of this one before I bought it. I can't jump? How is this going to work? Ha, yeah, it's absolutely one of the best platformers of all time, regardless.
Mega Man 2 - Been waffling between this and MM3 lately, but I think it's more that I've played MM2 so many times and I've got slight fatigue compared to MM3. Both are the high point of the series.
Dragon Warrior IV - It was a fight between this and DWIII, but ultimately, I'm giving it to DWIV. It's one of the rare 8-bit RPGs that needs no "good for an 8-bit JRPG" qualifier. It's just simply good.
