Hey all. I made the single dumbest mistake of my life today.
I have had my custom-built IPS GBA for a few months now and have been absolutely loving it. Today, however, I decided to get adventurous and swap out the plastic front screen with a glass one. I took off the plastic screen and successfully installed the glass one, but noticed a few dust particles resting on the screen. No problem, I thought, I'll just use some canned air....
For context, I'm living at my parents house until winter break is over. My dad always keeps the computer duster on a specific location on his shelf, so I went to grab it. I flicked the stem out on the can, pointed it at the screen, and almost crapped myself when I saw white foam spray all over my screen.... Turns out, he had put WD-40 there instead for whatever reason.
The screen was completely ruined, the stuff seeped in and ruined the whole display. I spent a month in the summer saving up for the parts for this thing so... whoops.... I ordered a new screen but blowing $60 for such a dumb mistake as a broke college student is... Oof.
Anyways, hope you guys can laugh at my mistake and maybe even avoid screw-ups like mine in the future. Cheers

Big oof, that definitely hurts. You're not alone. Although it's not a custom GBA, I managed to snap my GBA SP Onyx in half. I wasn't being careful with it, especially after the left trigger started to act up (it became difficult to read the input when I pressed it). After it snapped, I thought no biggie. I bought the thing for like $15 bitd, I'll just buy another, how expensive can they be?
One look and I knew I wouldn't be owning another one ever again.

If it makes you feel any better SP replacement shells are pretty cheap! You could probs have the whole thing fixed for under $30 after the cost of the shell and tri-wing screwdriver!

Aw, dang, sorry to hear that. Definitely no laughs from me - I hate it when I lose hardware, and I hate it even more when I'm the one responsible. I remember frying a component recording device for PC because I hooked up the wrong power supply to it... yeah, that wasn't the best smell in the world. Hope you get it swapped back out and back to playing soon!

Truly sucks dreamgazer, hate that happened to your GBA. I definitely understand how aggravating specks can be under a screen. I can't abide them either.

This story makes me uncomfortable because sooner or later it will be necessary to recap many of my old gaming systems but I'm worried I'll damage them in the process.
