Xeogred has said repeatedly he'll play both, y'all. It makes sense to play the earlier one first. There's no need for "no, play this INSTEAD" arguments. Xeogred started with DQ5 so I didn't realize "play them in order" mattered to him with this series. Regardless, I hope to play DQ6 this year via DS, and I think Xeo is playing it via SFC? If so, it'll be interesting to contrast our experiences via the different versions.

I wish the patch were fully completed and polished on SFC, as I think that would be the best version, but the DS game ends up on the same level because the SFC version isn't. It's more than enough to be finished, though, and I've beaten it both ways, so regardless of how you take it on, you're in for a good time. Anyway, this is the patch you want to use: www.romhacking.net/translations/344/

I blame most fans for leading me to DQ5 first. "Best DQ?" results on the web usually led to people hyping up DQ5, lol. It was still good but then you guys steered me right and I liked DQ4 a fair bit more like most here.
I can see how my order is confusing, but yeah I think I've made it clear over the last year or two even now, I want to hit up DQ6 before making the jump to DQ8. Completing the first two "trilogies". After loving DQ4, I did want to backtrack and see the series' roots and start going mostly in chronological order at that point. And yeah I plan to go with the DQ6 SFC (repeating myself again ) ... I'm pretty curious to see how the gameplay and quality of life advancements were by this entry. Even though my journey through them has been all over, with the DS games, etc. But I still suspect DQ6 probably set the table for features in the newer ones.
Plus I love the SNES and DQ6 looks like a top notch JRPG entry on the system.

For me DQ8 (on PS2 mind) was the pinnacle of DQ, I don't know if SQEX can (or will) ever top it. It's basically the apex example of a classically styled JRPG. That said, I've played other DQs that were great too. And I plan to play more of the series as well. Dragon Quest is the ultimate JRPG comfort food.

Yep, that makes a lot of sense, Xeogred. Dragon Quest VI is undeniably gorgeous. The DS version is fine (the gameplay is still there, obviously), but the shift to polygonal backgrounds and scaling sprites definitely makes it a visual downgrade, unlike the other DS remakes compared to their original source material.

polygonal backgrounds and scaling sprites A fair amount of gamers don't like that aesthetic in general, but I've always been a big fan of it. Especially in JRPGs. Also, I think it's cool to be able to beat the entire Zenithia trilogy on the same platform (DS). Don't take that as me saying DQ6 on SFC looks anything less than sumptuous though. I think it and DQ3 both are graphically excellent on the SFC.

I spent over 120 hours on the DS version of VI so I did enjoy it (I maxed everyone out, got every item drop in the game, did the bonus stuff and all the party talk etc and just played around in general) but I really love the graphics for the Super Famicom version and look forward to playing that version one day. I still remember getting my hopes up it was coming to SNES when Nintendo Power had the multiple page Epic Center article about it. Chrono Trigger had come out and I thought VI had a good chance of release haha.

Chainsaw Bilqis: Yep, I remember that feature! So disappointing that we didn't get it or DQV back in the day.

What's the deal with that anyways? Enix was still publishing and localizing some games that gen. Did "Dragon Warrior" 1-4 not sell enough for them to keep localizing them?

Most of their games, including Dragon Warrior, didn't sell very well, and the timing for DQVI was pretty poor as well - the American branch shut down in 1995 for a while because of the bad sales. Enix never found that megahit like Square did... with megahit being relative, of course, since it really didn't blow up until Final Fantasy VII.
