January's theme is all about playing video games that are based on anime. Yes, we're talking about playing 10+ year old licensed games, oh joy! There are indeed a great many games based on anime series, OVAs, and films though. If you need inspiration, check out these links:

Here's the games featured in the title image: From left to right, top to bottom:

Had no idea an Alita game existed. But it was a Japanese only release so that explains it. Looks like as of 2019, some people are working on a translation. The game looks pretty solid!
I love Dirty Pair but that FDS game looks... bad, lol. The sound is awful.

The Mamono Hunter Yohko Genesis game is also terrible, but the cover's pretty nice.
I wanted to mention that we had a "good licensed games" thread, if anyone's looking for inspiration. I'll have to think about it myself. I've played a lot of anime/manga-licensed games, and some of them were very good, but I don't know if there's any currently on my radar.

I've only played GS Mikami out of that bunch, and I definitely recommend it to SNES platformer fans. Very solid game. A game you'd think I would have liked was Hyper Iria, also for SNES, but I wasn't as big a fan of that. It's not bad, but there were enough quirks that it didn't do a lot for me. I think some folks here really liked it though. ( Xeogred or Ex, maybe?)

I liked both games you named. Hyper Iria is one of the only action-adventure games of that type on the SNES. It does have some flaws, like some confusing level layouts, but I find it kind of ahead of its time.

The Mamono Hunter Yohko Genesis game is also terrible I agree.Well you guys wanted this theme, or at least most of you voted it above other themes, so here we are folks. (I wanted to play 3D Fighters this month. ) That said, there really are loads of licensed anime games available. The three links I posted provide copious plausible candidates. I've only played GS Mikami out of that bunch, and I definitely recommend it to SNES platformer fans. I have also beaten GS Mikami. Though it was many years ago, I remember thinking it was decent. I definitely enjoyed that one. To be transparent, I was already a fan of the anime, so that may have bolstered my opinion. - If anyone wants to play a great action-adventure, I highly recommend: Also Sarge, Valkyria Chronicles has its own anime now, so it fits this theme in an ouroboros kinda way. I'll recommend it to you specifically, as a way-above-average SRPG with a whole lot of heart.

I definitely need to roll around to that one again. Hard to believe it has been 12 years since it came out.

Hard to believe it has been 12 years since it came out. Yes, the time, it does fly. I finished and loved VC1 and VC2, Ex approved! I've got a save about 1/3rd of the way through VC3, I plan to finish it next year. VC3 is great stuff, but it's a little too massive for its own good... I got burnt out.
