Brought to us by paulofthewest :This month's theme is Strategy/Tactical games. The spirit of this theme are games that emphasize skillful long-term planning over quick reaction times. Naturally there is some overlap (like RTS) which do add a fun dynamic to the genre, but still focus outwitting the opponent. This broad genre includes Turn Based Strategy, Real Time Strategy, and a mix of both ("4x"). I'm including any tactics heavy games like Tactical RPGs (also referred to as Strategy RPGs) as those fit as well. Here are some lists if you are searching for ideas:
Turn-Based Real-Time 4x Tactical Turn-Based Tactical Real-Time For TRPGs/SRPGs here is the start of a long list: < 1994 TRPGsAs always suggestions are available upon request.

Right after I beat Valkyria Chronicles and am nearly 50 hours into SMT3...
Well, I definitely highly recommend any RTS fans to check Valkyria Chronicles out if you haven't. Bonus points if you like anime.

Hmm, I wonder if there's any SRPG I would dig that I haven't played yet on an easily-emulated platform. I'm gonna have to look into it. Since Xeogred is talking about SMT and SRPGs, the Majin Tensei games on the SNES were fan-translated. I have no idea if they're any good. The first DS MegaTen SRPG is quite decent (haven't played the sequel).

The first RTS I plan to tackle: Originally released in 2008 in Japan. "Why is that?" you may possibly wonder. Because I have already beaten the other two high profile RTS games on DS; Heroes of Mana and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. Might as well do this one too then.

I'll be surprised if you finish that one. I don't think it was particularly well received.

I'm interested in that one, actually. The other DS Blue Dragon, the ARPG, was surprisingly solid gameplay-wise. Trash story, though (not that I remember any of it).

Well DeSmuME or Melon DS would both likely run well on your personal laptop (with the mouse acting as a stylus). Another "easy to emulate" RTS that received good reviews: AKA "I can't believe it's not Warcraft".

Right after I beat Valkyria Chronicles and am nearly 50 hours into SMT3... Ya, I was thinking about it and a lot of games in this category are long. I was thinking of a sub competition of finding good strategy games that are less than 10 hours as most are over 20 hours.
I'm definitely going with fallout tactics first. Ex has yet to let me down.

Does Arc the Lad count? Super short, good, but way too easy.
