You're not missing much with Blue Dragon's plot, honestly. The more I play the game, the more I believe you. Though to be fair to Sakaguchi, I honestly believe the intended demographic for Blue Dragon games were upper elementary and middle school aged kids. In that light, the story works within its "Saturday morning cartoon" narrative framework. So I'll go with that assumption, unless something wickedly dark or perverse happens in the plot. I put another two hours into Blue Dragon Plus last night. I definitely like it, and the game's starting to grow some teeth. I daresay it can be frantic at times. There are some interface and unit path-finding issues which put some reviewers off, but they were impatient coddled unskilled players, based on my experience thus far. I'm certainly getting along well enough. The complexity of the systems design continues to grow. Units can now equip more than one Shadow for example, and split into multi-unit parties that can explore difference regions of the cube independently. Sometimes the game dictates who the leaders have to be (love me some Zola) for narrative reasons, but lower units are to the player's discretion. The "strategy" aspect of the game design is evolving for sure. I'm only 5 hours in now, and the game supposedly takes ~14 hours to beat, so there's still plenty to do and see yet. - What's everybody else playing for paulofthewest's theme?

Yeah, that's exactly what it is - very much Saturday morning cartoon vibes.
I'm currently working my way through Monstania. I wanted something short to start with after not feeling some of the others I've sampled (Valhollian, Shining Force III, FEDA), and so far I'm having a blast. Super fast pacing, and while it isn't difficult, you do have to think about positioning and whatnot to be effective. It's very much got a rogue-like control setup.
I've also enjoyed the soundtrack so far. Several tunes have reminded me of Breath of Fire III and Lunar, the latter of which makes perfect sense since Noriyuki Iwadare is the composer for this one.
Lunar, izzat you?
Oh, hai, BoF III.

Cool. If Monstania ends up being a winner for you, I'll check it out.

That BoFIII-sounding track reminded me once again how some of BoF3 sounds like Streets of Rage, with more RPG-ish melodies. BOF3's soundtrack (and that track in Monstania) is basically Streets of Rage + Chrono Trigger.
Notice I abbreviated Breath of Fire 3 in 3 different ways

The best part of BOFIII was its OST.

Yeah, I generally agree. I don't think it's bad, but it is slooooooow.

I'm cruising through Fallout Tactics. The choice of different party members definitely has different strategies to it. Right now the setup an ambush and draw out the enemy seems pretty solid so far. Especially if you have mines =)
I just got a good thrower and was in a level with plenty of grenades. That really helps flush out the enemies for your ambush.
Overall I really like it, but it is long...

Proud of you paulofthewest, I've recommended FT so many times over so many years, never had any takers. I hope it pulls through as win for you. I remember when the game gave me EMP shotgun shells I knew it was something special. Have NPCs started talking about the Calculator yet?

About three hours into Arc the Lad Twilight... not sure what to make of it overall so far. It's good, but not blowing me away. I knew to level my expectations for anything after SMT3, but yeah...
