Everyone references it, but, true story, I've never actually played it. Our school didn't have a copy. We did have an Apple IIe, a 286, and a 386. I played a decent amount of Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego, and almost had it beaten until somebody deleted my save game. Losers.

Anyone who claims to have beaten Oregon Trail = liar.
I think that's largely why it has such a legacy. Everyone would always joke how you or your livestock dies in the game at some point.

I mean, "You have died of dysentery." It's just a given.

My first concrete memories of PC gaming are of a family friend showing me Leisure Suit Larry and Dungeon Master back in 1987. Not sure what computer he had. I remember being amazed at the animation of Larry walking up some stairs, and the detailed graphics of mummies in Dungeon Master.
It was around 1991 that I received a 286 Tandy. In 1992 I got a 386 Goldstar. Those were gifts. In 1994 I bought (via part-time jobs while in high school) and built my first computer, it was a 486 33Mhz. I remember reading Computer Shopper agonizing over which video card and CD-ROM drive to get. I recall the CD-ROM using a caddy (awful old tech) and it came with Myst. The 486's video card was a Matrox Millennium, but I don't recall exactly which one. I used that 486 for many years, it wasn't until 1999 that I built my next rig, a Pentium II 450Mhz with an ATI Rage Pro 128. That P2 rig kept me going until 2005, when I built a Pentium 4 3Ghz with an ATI Radeon X850 XT. I still own and use the 2005 rig, for classic PC gaming purposes. I have not built any new rigs since the 2005 one, because I now use high end laptops for modern PC gaming. I don't care to build gaming rigs anymore.
As far as PC gaming goes. In the early years I was all about adventure games, especially the Sierra and Lucas Arts stuff. Then came Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM, and that ushered in the FPS craze. I was definitely all aboard the PC FPS craze for many years. I'd say from 1993-2003 were my peak FPS years. I did play other PC stuff in tandem. Occasional WRPGs, flight simulators, strategy stuff, and other genres well represented on PC back then. But my bread 'n' butter PC gaming was FPS. My all time favorite game ever, Thief: The Dark Project, happens to be a 1998 PC release.

Wow this will be quite the range.
I'm glad we won't need a modern graphics card =)
Maybe I'll play through Thief again. I now have a nice dark room and better sound.

Thief is sublime man. I played the Gold edition, which has a few extra levels. And yeah, you'll definitely want to play in the dark with some good sound!

Maybe I'll play through Thief again. I now have a nice dark room and better sound. It's my all time most favorite game ever, so yeah, recommended. Although these days, I agree with Xeogred, you probably want to play the Gold version. This is a game to play late at night, alone, in the dark.

You know, even I was impressed by Thief, despite it not quite being in my wheelhouse. I still say it's a game that you could give it a fresh coat of paint and no one would bat an eye - the gameplay holds up. I wish my CRT monitor hadn't gone and bit the dust for this month.

So what are folks considering playing for Xeogred's theme? I've collected a few horror adventure games, which were exclusive to PC and released in the 1990s. I plan to start playing one of them this week.
