I did play a bit of Myst myself the other day and yeah, while I love these games aesthetically, I'm not sure if I have the patience for them haha. This is one advancement in gaming that I do like, all the "walking simulators" nowadays I think kind of fill this void and to me personally, just simply being able to move around in real time makes it more engaging. 90's FMV/pre-rendered backdrops are a gorgeous aesthetic to me... but even back then, graphics weren't everything! When I played a bit of Shivers again last year, I lost interest fast too. Even though I grew up loving that one. Just might be a genre best left in the past to me.
Other stuff I sampled this week so far was Might and Magic 1 and 6. 1 is too primitive for me, kind of like how I don't see myself caring much for 8bit era JRPG's. 6 seemed cooler though but I could tell it's a DENSE game, I'm not sure I'm ready for more note taking and something like that on top of DQ8 right now haha.
Also sampled Syndicate. Again, I love the aesthetic, but it was so slow to do anything... mid to late 90's isometric stuff is probably more my jam.
I'm sticking with Descent for now, so I might be with Sarge on that one. I'm digging it!

I'm a fan of that modern genre as well, though I find the genre name itself to be demeaning towards the content. Well, Shivers was targeting younger players. Phantasmagoria is to Shivers as Stephen King is to Goosebumps. I hope it stays entertaining for you. If you really like it, there's a fair amount of expansions and sequels: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Descent_(series)Though on forums I only ever read people praising the first Descent. It's like the rest of the series doesn't exist.

Indeed. I wish people would just call them "adventure" games too. Yeah, I meant to mention Shivers felt very Goosebumps going back to it, haha. Even Myst seems more serious. I'll definitely be curious to hear how Phantasmagoria goes though if you keep sticking with it.
I will definitely give the old Blade Runner adventure game a shot sometime though, that's one I can probably get into. I thought I owned it but I guess not. For now I have like 90 GOG games though, so I'm going to chip away at that first.

Well... I don't know about Descent anymore. Got to level 6 and...
HITSCANNERS
Everywhere. The levels are getting more mazey, shield pickups are becoming scarce, 9 times out of 10 a door has an enemy or explosion right in front of it... and then yeah, hitscanners in a 6D game. They're a tough nuisance in the Build Engine game, but with Descent being a battle for the controls (in a mildly fun way with its gimmick), this is just annoying.
I laughed how a web search brought up this: https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/comments/kvixjq/descent_1995_how_hitscan_ruins_everything/
Also seeing people mention difficulty 3 (that I chose) is more like Hard compared to most games.

Hitscanning is lazy difficulty, not a fan of it either.

Definitely something that a lot of games from that era had. Even some of my favorites.

I think it's why I fall off Shadow Warrior all the time too. DN3D and Blood have their fill of hitscanners galore, but something about Shadow Warrior seems even more over the top with that. Your health just melts...
Glad Doom kept it at a minimum, but even so... nobody likes this guy!

Those dudes were super scary. Also, I just happened to be near that level from playing D1X-Rebirth a while back, and yeah, boy, those hitscanners give you pretty much no warning. I assume you'd need to lure them out or something to deal with them properly instead of barreling around a corner.

At 3 hours invested, I'm about halfway through Phantasmagoria at this point. I wasn't too sure at first but the game has grown on me. There's plenty of flaws (even for its day) yet the flow remains strangely compelling. I will say this "horror game" has been lacking in tangible horror thus far. There's only been two creepy scenes at this point, so I'm guessing the back half is where the horror takes precedence. Supposedly there's a controversial rape scene which garnered considerable notoriety. Haven't seen that yet either. I remember reading in an interview with Ken Williams that he didn't want the scene in the game but Roberta was adamant about it.
