I wouldn't say "despite" having 4 writers! Having a bunch of writers working more-or-less separately is the reason why FF games almost never live up to their early portion One would hope having four writers would result in lots of ideas, but also checks and balances, allowing the best ideas to go forward. The real result is just too many cooks in the kitchen, designed by committee mush. Anyone who doesn't like FF6, can't be trusted. Agreed.

Maybe they had one chief writer for the overarching story beats while tertiary writers wrote stuff like side quests and NPC dialog.

I read in an interview somewhere that they just split the main stories for FF games between different writers and they just put it together at the end. And come on, you can tell they're doing that. It never meshes together well. It's not "writing by committee", because that implies some sort of close collaboration. It's not a writer's room like serial TV shows, and it's nothing organized and sensible like what anayo suggests. It's exactly the mess you can tell it is. That's why the beginning of every older FF game is always better than the rest.

That's why the beginning of every older FF game is always better than the rest. Oh wow. Actually that makes complete sense. My brain must have been straining to see order where there wasn't any, I guess like humans look at random rocks on Mars and think it's a guy's face. While playing I was thinking the story had the unrestrained enthusiasm of a teenager who doesn't know much about the world or how to reign himself in. It's utter nonsense, but he's so convicted about what he wants to say that it's somewhat endearing without meaning to be.

After beating Chrono Trigger, I am intrigued by Radical Dreamers. Has anybody played it?

For many of the FF games I've experienced, I can 100% believe this is true. the story had the unrestrained enthusiasm of a teenager who doesn't know much about the world or how to reign himself in. It's utter nonsense This encapsulates about 90% of JRPGs' plots that I've played.

anayo: That looks fine to me. By fine I mean, yeah ... it looks like an acid trip. lol After beating Chrono Trigger, I am intrigued by Radical Dreamers. Has anybody played it? It's been so long since I played some of it. It's a visual novel though so I never got too far, but it's kind of fascinating in that it's a prototype Chrono Cross I think. It has some of the same characters, but I think they don't tie in together at all beyond that and are separate alternate stories. Not sure if I'm right on that though.

I tried Radical Dreamers but never stuck with it too long. It is a VN, and you can actually make wrong choices and die, IIRC. And yeah, it's partly a prototype of Cross. There's music from RD that was re-used in CC, IIRC.

Chiming in, it's decent enough, but not really all that substantial in the end. Only interesting as a curiosity leading into Chrono Cross.
