Star Ocean, Tales, etc I consider half ARPG's practically and I seem to recall Grandia 2 was something in the vein of that. Who knows, it's been 20 some years since I played it and it's one I haven't really looked back on since.

The original Suikoden is a great JRPG. No nonsense, all fat cut, fast pacing, cool battle system, finish in ~20 hours... I enjoyed it very much.
Front Mission 3 is a good "my first Front Mission". It's nowhere near as complex or difficult as its sequels, which is a plus if you're a newcomer.

So what all has everyone decided to play for this month? These are the two PS1 JRPGs I intend to give a fair shot to (and finish if they are good): Both games are on the short end of completion times, relatively speaking for JRPGs. Also I've not finished either of these before, all new to me. I plan to start VH tonight.

I watched some Brave Prove footage earlier and I'm not really hyped for it. At first glance, it looks like a very competent 2D action RPG, the type I would have loved a few years ago. But I've played that game before, so many, many times. I felt that often as I was playing through Community Pom a few months ago. I've been there before. I need fresher experiences.
I've played almost every PSX RPG I would care to play. If I play one, it'll be FF8. I just wish it was 15 hours instead of 50. I think I'll do this; I'll play it for at least 5 hours this month, maybe this weekend. If I like it enough, I'll keep going. And if not, that'll be that.

I'm probably going to roll forward with Terranigma, but... if everyone jumps on the FFVIII train, I might do the same just to see how well it has held up.

I've been there before. I need fresher experiences. Some games that are in that vein but more modern (fresher) in execution: www.gog.com/en/game/zwei_the_ilvard_insurrectionwww.romhacking.net/translations/5739/I can see that given your JRPG history. For me there's still plenty of PS1 JRPGs I'm interested in, but I've only got so much free time for 30-60 hour RPGs every month. One PS1 RPG I'm very interested in: I've read it can be beaten in 4 hours, I might check it out this month too. I will definitely be playing FF8 later this year, it's just not a good fit for my schedule at the moment. Also Xeogred I recommend this one to you: If you've never played it, I think you'd like it.

I tried Asuncia when the translation came out. It's a weird game, not really a full-fledged RPG experience I'd say. You're kind of just moving through an overworld at semi-random (you get hints as to what you might find in various directions) and getting into SRPG battles. And that's it. I guess it's like a more elaborate Guardian War.
And Dragon Valor is really a straight up action game with the barest of RPG elements. It's not bad, but it's nothing special either, IMO.

I can see how for your tastes Dragon Valor is "nothing special". But for Xeogred's tastes, I think he'd like it. I enjoyed the game when I beat it many years ago. Side-scrolling real time slash 'em up action with platforming and multi-generational protagonists. Also dragons.
