I don't know, I hate that DS super-deformed 3D look, and I associate it with mediocrity. But yes, I meant more than the graphics.

The problem with the DS one, is that I've heard it has really bad English dubbing. Wonder if you can turn voices off?

I don't know, I hate that DS super-deformed 3D look Given the platform, it's the game's backgrounds that impress me: It's true the 256x192 resolution encouraged the majority of DS JRPG developers to use chibi format for characters. I can understand if you don't enjoy that style though. The problem with the DS one, is that I've heard it has really bad English dubbing. Seems like people claim 95% of English dubbed JRPGs have "bad voice acting", yet they don't even know Japanese in the first place to determine if the original Japanese dub is good either. Regardless there is an "undub" version of this game's English ROM - text is all English voices are all Japanese.

I like SD in 2D, it just looks wrong in 3D to me. And even then, it looks the wrongest on DS for some reason. It's that particular version of the style they used for the FF remakes and forgettable games like 4 Heroes of Light that seems to have influenced Tierkreis.

Just made it to Disc 3. My understanding is the final disc is shorter - I assume mostly final dungeon-type stuff, lots of FMV, etc. - so I'm probably almost 2/3rds through. The story took a few weird turns. Some of them might turn out to work - I'm reserving judgement, though I already know the beginning is going to remain the strongest part by now - but there have been a couple really dumb moments along the way. The whole battle of the gardens was... not nearly as cool as it could have been. Rinoa must have been hanging on to that cliff one-handed for half an hour. The fact that the useless "you have to help her, Squall!" conversations were immediately followed by a decision to ram into the other garden before trying to rescue her - as it that wouldn't 100% guarantee she'd let go of the cliff and die... and then they flirt and fuck around in front of the other Garden's door even though there's a huge battle going on and they were rushing towards it a second before... actually the fact that you're all pumped up for the battle and Rinoa immediately falls off, causing you to go look for a rope... that whole part sucked. The battle with the sorceress was cool, but over far too soon. Maybe if Raijin and Fujin had joined in (though I think you can't have more than 3 enemies at once in this game)? For a while she was looking pretty threatening, but she only had 10,000HP and I do about 1,600 with Squall's attack at this point if I trigger the gunblade properly. She'd better thank her god she didn't trigger my limit break, I would have taken like 75% of her HP in one turn.

If only she fell... I want to say I HATED Rinoa, because of how obsessed she was with Seifer, whom is pretty lame. Thus this game has a big void in lacking a cool rival/antagonist. Edea doesn't really cut it. But this is all going off memories from 20 years ago.
Have you started learning about the orphanage stuff? I recall that's when the plot goes out the window. lol
One thing mechanically I'm curious about toei : In one of my last attempts to replay this game years ago, I think whenever the game switched you over to Laguna's team, it was a weird gamble if your Junction setups transferred over cleanly or not. Like those three characters have some kind of code tying them to certain battle positions, or maybe specific characters even? I remember getting annoyed that I had to constantly reconfigure my Junctions when the game switched back and forth between the perspectives. Maybe it was a fluke? How's that been for you?

I remember getting annoyed that I had to constantly reconfigure my Junctions when the game switched back and forth between the perspectives. Maybe it was a fluke? How's that been for you? Yeah, I had the big orphanage scene where they all remember, and now I'm about to head there again. It definitely comes out of nowhere, but when I'd heard before that Junctioning could affect the user's memory, I knew some kind of amnesia would come up sooner or later. Square could never pass up on amnesia... actually, I was thinking that it wasn't just Square, since Glory of Heracles 3 is the earliest RPG I can think of with a big plot-twist related to amnesia offhand... but wouldn't you know it, FF8 has the same lead writer. The early mystery in GOH3 is that you don't know who you are, and you can't seem to die. As you start to travel, you rapidly come across several people in the same situation - they don't know who they are, and they can't die. IIRC, it turns out you're all Demi-Gods who were banished from the pantheon due to some offense and had your memories sealed. The Gods then guided you through a quest without your knowledge in order to test your worthiness and decide if you could be readmitted. It works well in-game because of the Greek mythology setting. In FF8 it feels weirder because the game seems to be want to be more grounded and human at first. Gardenmaster NORG was another WTF moment. I was glad we got to kick his ass immediately upon meeting him. Seifer is weirdly weak whenever you fight him, and Edea is not a very impressive villain. That parade with the clown dancers was just corny and ridiculous, lol. Also, it's been a long time since I haven't gotten to play as Laguna, though I've heard of him in the present from various sources. I noticed something similar with the Junctions. Zell is supposed to be Ward in the past, and I'm not sure who's the other guy, so they don't always transfer automatically. Squall is always Laguna, though. Personally I settled on always having 3 profiles that I switch directly though the Junction Switch option whenever the team changes (which is all the time in this game) so it doesn't take time anymore. Early on I messed with it all the time.

These midi versions of the Sephiroth tracks are pure pain.
