of which Mega Man absolutely aren't the pinnacle btw Ex Keep in mind, I was throwing the X, Zero, and ZX MM games in with that statement. (I would put the 2D Castlevania games in at a close second.) I understand if you disagree, but you should offer a counter-argument when you do. What series (or individual game) do you personally consider the apex of 2D action-platformer? I figured some here at HRG may have finished Popful Mail before. What I didn't realize until recently, is that this game released on many platforms. Aside from SEGA CD, it's also on SFC, PCE-CD, PC88, PC98, Windows, and even mobile. That said, not every version was programmed by Falcom. From what I can tell, the PC88/98 and SFC versions were the entries programmed by Falcom. And as far as I know, the only version available in English is the SEGA CD one, that's the reason I'm playing it. Literally every action platformer I've ever enjoyed. As you may remember, I don't like Castlevania, either. Well, I like the later, "Metroidvania" ones I've played, just not the classic ones. They're too stiff, too slow, and too unfair. Almost every Falcom game from that era had a million different ports. They were one of the last notable company to stick to the more and more niche Japanese computer gaming market, though almost all their games then would get a million ports. I bet the licensing to all those different companies really helped.

Our guy toei does have some unique tastes. Fair enough.

I've got 2 hours in Popful Mail currently. Thus far it's pretty dang decent. I think Sarge would really like this one, if he's never played through it before. One caveat concerning this theme though; I didn't realize you can play as multiple characters in this game. Like right now I'm using the magician who shoots fireballs. So you're not always playing as a sword wielding protagonist. You do start the game off that way though, and the platforming stays consistent regardless of character being used.

I've actually played quite a bit of it (even restarted it last year), but never finished. The bro has, though. It's a very good game.

Figuring out what I'm going to jump into... Popful Mail is tempting, and while it probably isn't really a platformer, I believe Magic Knight Rayearth on Saturn still has platforming elements. Rocket Knight Adventures also came to mind - I don't think I've ever actually finished that game legit. And I saw another Genesis game mentioned, Galahad, which is a port of Leander on the Amiga, a game developed by Traveler's Tales (and the subject of some interesting content on the GameHut YouTube channel regarding collision detection).
EDIT: Haha, never mind, I did beat RKA back in 2019.

I've played through Sparkster SNES (very good game), and I've played some of Sparkster on Genesis (not sure what they were thinking).
Weirdly enough, Chakan also came to mind. Not sure if I'll give it run or not. I almost wish I'd put off Blades of Vengeance, which at least has one sword-wielder... until she upgrades.
Another recommendation to folks is maybe give Hagane a shot. There are some aspects of Shinobi in there, although the game also requires some insane mastery of the controls at the very end.

Sarge Hagane isn't as hard as people say it is. IMO it's a hundred times less frustrating than Ninja Gaiden or any other of those NES platformers you like, so I'm sure you can handle it. And it's good. The main advice I'll give you is this; get used to cycling between weapons from the start, and familiarize yourself with their respective position in rotation so you can go from one to the next on the fly without having to fumble around. I've played some Legend of Galahad. It's pretty cool for a European platformer. Definitely a different kind of pace, a little slower and more exploratory. Nice music. Dahna: Megami Tanjou on the Genesis is also good, but the controls are a little weird, so it gives off a bad first impression. Once you adapt to it, though, it plays well and has cool levels and ambiance. It's sort of an unofficial Rastan game, with many of the same staff and a similar setting.

toei: I do agree it really isn't as hard as it seems. It's tough, but it's more the steep learning curve on all your tools than anything. Been meaning to give Dahna a longer go. Gonna add it to the list.
