Title: GanryuPlatform: Arcade Region release played: World Year of release: 1999 Developer: Visco Corporation Publisher: Visco Corporation Graphics: 3/5 Audio: 3/5 Challenge: 3/5 Fun factor: 4/5 Quick Thoughts: Ganryu is a side-scrolling hack 'n' slash action-platformer, based on the legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Ganryu was originally released for arcade in 1999, later in 2015 ported to Neo Geo AES, and in 2017 ported to Dreamcast. Players assume the role of Musashi on a journey to defeat a resurrected KojirÅ (evil bad dude) and his legion of dark ninjas and vile monsters terrorizing Kyoto. Unlike most arcade games Ganryu is tactically paced with methodical level design, feeling more like a console game in execution. For fans of games like Shinobi, Strider 2, or Ninja Gaiden, Ganryu is well worth slicing and dicing through. +Lots of player moves, including wall jumping, slide kick, katana-chi charge and grapple swing. +Fun boss battles. +4 of the 5 levels are large and expansive. +The OST really captures the fuedal Japan vibe. +Cool cutscenes with proper Engrish. -Checkpoint system (credit feeding won't help). -The 5th (final) level is pitifully short. -Wish there were more sections requiring grapple swinging. -Some of the subweapons are crappy. -The final boss is very easy. Ex's time to beat: 40 minutes
Ex's rating: 7/10 -
That's gonna wrap this theme up for me. Here's what I beat:
Ganryu 7/10 Ken-Go: Lightning Swords 6/10 Magic Sword 7/10
Ninja Spirit 6/10
Rastan Saga II 5/10

Oh, Ganryu was one of the games I'd considered for this month. I just didn't get around to it, although I expect it to be better than those I've played. I'll probably play it before too too long.
