Xeogred I love Sunset Riders. I don't know anything about the Mickey Mouse game, but this is a Hyperstone Heist situation, as the SNES and Genesis versions are significantly different, and both are worth playing. The SNES version is closer to the arcade, and actually plays a bit better. It only has one real flaw, which is that it makes you restart the level if you use a credit in single-player. This is a problem because the final boss is insane. It took me forever to beat him. The game seems more calibrated towards two players in that way. The Genesis version has much faster bullets, so you get shot a lot more, but somehow it's not so hard because it doesn't do that with credits and you can gain a lot of lives in the bonus stages (which are different from the SNES bonus stages). The other major difference is that it takes about half the levels from the arcade and SNES versions and makes two levels out of each theme, while getting rid of the rest. It has most of the same bosses, but sometimes their patterns and the locations you fight them in are different.

I had a strange hunch both versions of Sunset Riders were worth a look. I'll try to prioritize it since they get name dropped a lot.
Is Lethal Enforcers bad? It doesn't look like it'd be very fun with a normal controller haha.

It's still good playing with a mouse (you might have to look up calibration in MAME for aim to work right if you go that route). It's nearly unplayable with a controller, though. You just can't be good, the sight doesn't move fast enough.

UN Squadron:
- Already seems like one of the best SNES shmups (and I know the SNES is the butt of jokes for shmups, but there's a few I like on it) - I usually don't like currency/upgrade systems like this, but it's really cool here - The bombing run EX levels seem kind of pointless. I did 2-3 of them and only got like 20k out of it. Doesn't seem like much. - Tried two upgraded ships. One had a diagonal-forward attack that was very useful. Its upgraded guns is kind of low though, so the spread isn't great. The other ship I tried specialized in "Forward" attacks... didn't seem much better than the base ship though. But I suspect the Tri-laser beam does a lot of piercing damage. I'll have to play more and check out the other ships though to see what's ideal for what situations. - Excellent music of course

The shop system was probably my favorite part, but also just how well balanced the game is. For being a shmup it doesn't overwhelm the player with unbalanced nonsense very often.

Yeah, I kind of just put it down to rest for the night. But it seems pretty doable and balanced, I wasn't using save states for now. Think I cleared ~4-5 stages. I'll jump back in fresh again next time... and not waste my money on one of those ships haha.

~ 1h16m with Shin, Normal difficulty
I like how Un-anime they made the American cover. Pretty common I guess though.
Great stuff to jump back into, but this boss was really lame:
I think balance would be making all the bosses/levels doable no matter what ship you have. But this boss is near impossible if you don't buy the 500k one or have tons of "upward" attacking weapons to spare. After awhile I even tried to cheese it with save states, you can even get a hidden shield near the start of this boss, and try to hover in that perfect pixel safe zone near the blue weak point... but the boss keeps moving, while enemies below constantly spawn, and it's just so chaotic. So I took a death and bought that expensive ship that specialized in upward attacks and it was way easier. I wanted to save up for the final ship which was one million, but couldn't get there because of this boss. The last level gives you 500k too, but then you can't start a NG+ or anything with all that cash haha... dangit.
Super fun shmup otherwise and pretty bite sized. No level or boss overstays its welcome. The shop upgrade system is pretty good, minus a few levels making things a little unbalanced depending on which ship you have or don't. Great Mega Man X styled tunes. So overall I recommend it to any 16bit shmup fan.

XeogredGlad to read you finished and enjoyed U.N. Squadron. I don't recall which plane I flew (it was 23 years ago), but I don't recall having any "can't hit them" issues with bosses, so I must have used a plane that could. The shop system is great, I always appreciate when shmups incorporate them (part of why I enjoy the Fantasy Zone series). As I said before U.N. Squadron is well balanced for a shmup, especially a console port one... makes it not a pain to play. Also the pilots look like they were drawn by Kaoru Shintani? The Area 88 manga creator. If not Capcom blatantly ripped off his character aesthetic. Also Xeogred if you want more of this game, check out Carrier Air Wing via MAME. It's the spiritual successor to U.N. Squadron. - I've barely played any video games at all this week sadly (not even Ever Oasis), real life obligations have been eating up my free time lately. But this weekend I will take down Rocket Knight Adventures at the very least. I'd like to finish 2 Capcom and 2 Konami games this month at minimum.

I think UN Squadron is just the English version/name of Area 88. Pretty sure this is the same series?
Does the blue guy look more familiar? Something about him "having more weapons" when you can pick a pilot. Maybe he was more viable for some of the bosses that got tricky if they were too low or too high position wise. The Mario looking dude (I don't remember him at all in the OVA haha), I guess his shield is really good and doesn't dwindle as much. But I didn't sample either character enough to see if their upgraded ships differ much.
Carrier Air Wing should still fit this thread, 1990 and all? So I definitely may give it a look soon.
