Yeah, sadly this fits this thread for me too. Nier Automata came out in 2017 and it's been nothing but painful low key updates from Yoko Taro since. Some jokes here and there... but I wish someone would give this man money to make another bigger AA/AAA game. He always says give him lots of money and he'll get to work. So I don't think he's trying to avoid work or burned out, nothing like that.
What surprised me here is that I thought he was purely employed by Square Enix. But I guess he's maybe more freelance after all. Which makes it even more painful... like Platinum hello? This dude helped you make one of your best games. Make a new IP with him!

I need a thread that's in the middle of "Looking forward to" and "Not..."
I just... I dunno. I'm the Souls guy, I love grimdark. I bet this would appeal to me a lot more than Witcher with the FF tint and Japanese storytelling, etc. I love Devil May Cry and the DMC5 battle director is attached. Combat certainly looks cool.
But for FF16? Just can't deny how supremely neutral I feel seeing any updates about this game.
If anything, the drama around a PC port is hilarious.

I wish Square-Enix would make a Final Fantasy that, you know, feels like a Final Fantasy game. Although that’s likely never going to happen. Ever since 10 complicated leveling up (with 8 as a precedent) and then 11 being an MMO and 15 being an action game, Final Fantasy has no core identity. Then they remade 7 as a Mana game and that was too successful to not continue using (for a while, anyway).
I liked 15 and I liked the 7 remake (which I wasn’t getting until a coworker hyped me up for it) but the last one that felt like a Final Fantasy game was Final Fantasy Dimensions. I really want a PC port and/or some acknowledgment from Square-Enix that it existed.

I will say I loved FF7Remake myself. Awesome party combat system. So I'm stoked for the next one or two of those at least. But I can see how they're a turn off for some fans as well. lol
I think my hangup with FF16 is it going full blown single character ARPG. I like FF and JRPG's for the party/adventure vibes. But also aside from that, FF is still kind of whimsical and looks cool. FF16 looks so dreadfully serious with a color palette that's just brown/black. Nothing really cool to look at. Again, might be weird coming from a Souls guy... lol. But FromSoftware does that stuff best...

I hate this trend of turning characters (and even anthropomorphizing a car) into the most generic anime chicks. And I'm surprised Segagaga still isn't translated. Xeogred That's cause FromSoftware does dark dark and Square does dated Evanescence emo dark.

Dishonored 1 and 2 along with their expansions, are some of the best games I've played of the last decade. You can tell that old IonStorm/Eidos DNA is still strongly in there with the quality and design philosophy of these games, along with director Harvey Smith. In many ways you could argue this series is the true successor to the original two Deus Ex games and Thief all in one. And then their Prey came out, even with original Deus Ex legacy staff (level designers from what I remember), delivering yet another amazing modern immersive sim more in the vein of System Shock 1-2. Absolutely stellar games. Arx Fatalis sounds like an Ultima Underworld love letter and I need to check out again.
Single player immersive sims.
At some point, that somehow means that Bethesda/Microsoft want Arkane Studios to make an always online, live-service, open world co-op shooter.
Redfall Is Currently Arkane's Lowest Rated Game Ever
How many times have we seen this case? Just happened with Platinum and Babylon's Fall too. Bioware and Anthem. BUT MATH IS HARD!!! Maybe don't force studios who are known for making good single player games to go utterly out of their norm to make some half baked multiplayer money grab. Just a thought...

How many times have we seen this case? Next the publisher will blame the studio, and either close them, or absorb them into one of their other studios.
